Ivorian international Gervinho came to Arsenal in 2011 with real promise due to his attacking flair, having just helped Lille to the French double.

Two years later, and after a spell in North London which has hardly set sparks flying, Gervinho looks set to be on his way to Roma for a possible future fee of £7 million.

Reunited

The current coach at Italian outfit Roma is Rudi Garcia, who was Gervinho’s boss at Lille and is keen to be reunited with the attacker.

After the sale of Manuel Almunia to Watford and more recently Vito Mannone to Sunderland, Arsenal are left with only Lukasz Fabianski and Wojciech Szczesny at 28 and 23 years old respectively as the first-team goalkeeping options at the club.

Arsenal’s goalkeeping conundrum

Although Szczesny is very highly regarded by the coaching staff and is seen as the goalkeeper to truly replace David Seaman and Jens Lehmann in the long-term, he is not yet the all-round finished product to effectively contribute to a title-winning team.

Hence Arsene Wenger’s desire to take advantage of QPR’s relegation, and sign an incredibly experienced goalkeeper in the form of Julio Cesar for a mere dent in the colossal transfer budget Arsenal are reported to have this summer.

Belgian striker Christian Benteke has handed in a transfer request to his club Aston Villa. This comes after a successful season for the 22 year old after signing from Genk for £7m last summer.

He scored 19 goals in 34 appearances helping to keep Aston Villa’s top-flight status, eventually being beaten to the PFA Young Player of the Year by Gareth Bale.

Villa’s response

The club statement reads:

"In response to reports that Christian Benteke has not travelled to Germany with the club and has made a transfer request, we can confirm that both are accurate… Having received his transfer request, we have also informed him that should we receive an offer within an appropriate timeframe during pre-season which meets our valuation we would act upon it. But he will remain a Villa player should this not happen."

Arsenal target Gonzalo Higuaín is reportedly already back in pre season training on a fitness regime at Madrid after a holiday in Miami.

Notoriously in-accurate Marca claim that those around him have denied all links with Arsenal, and that Madrid have not even received a bid.

However these comments from Jorge Higuaín cause me to think differently; “We have permission [from Madrid] and hopefully we can soon see my son in the Premier League”. I think it’s safe to say that Arsenal have at least made a bid.

A sign of intent?

With the Argentinian forward back in training already, this could mean one of two things:

As Arsenal Latest revealed to you yesterday, a Gonzalo Higuaín deal draws ever closer.

Spanish TV cameras in Madrid’s Barajas airport spotted the Argentinian striker on Thursday ending his Miami holiday.

Some reports suggest that he is flying to London to complete a deal with Arsenal.
