Tomorrow. Arsenal against Spurs. Big game. Important. Scary Gareth Bale. Aarrrrrgh. That’s what’s running through most Gooner’s heads at the moment.

Tomorrow, at 4PM GMT, Arsenal will take the field against their local rivals, at their tumbledown home, to attempt to wrest back the initiative in the race for the top four.

Can Arsenal pull it off? Will they be able to deal with Gareth Bale, who has performed such incredible footballing acts for a monkey?

All this has been covered in a match preview, so I’ll talk about something else.

The North London derby is without doubt one of the biggest games in the football calendar. Whereas in previous years Arsenal fans were certain of a result, Spurs’ turn of fortunes in recent seasons has seen this fixture take extra meaning.

Recent Meetings

North London derbies are notoriously high-scoring edge-of-the-seat thrillers, with previous matches ending 4-5, 4-4 and 5-2. However, the derby can also become a cagey affair, with both sides too set on not losing the game rather than winning, though with 53 goals in the past 11 fixtures between these teams, it would appear unlikely to repeat itself.

Following Arsenal’s thrashing of Spurs 5-2 earlier in the season at the Emirates, Spurs will be seeking revenge as both teams chase after Champions League places and North London bragging rights.

Team News

Arsenal are without several first team players for the derby this weekend. While Kieran Gibbs is a long term absentee, Bacary Sagna will also miss out due to a knee injury, meaning Nacho Monreal and Carl Jenkinson look set to start the match. Mr Injury himself, Abou Diaby, is rated at 50-50 for the fixture as he struggles to shake off a calf problem. However, Arsenal have competition for places as Podolski and Koscielny will both be in contention for places after being rested in last week’s win over Aston Villa.

There is no question about where Spurs’ biggest threat lies: Gareth Bale.

Spurs have been on a rich vein of form recently under manager Andre Villas-Boas, climbing to 3rd in the table thanks largely to Welsh winger Gareth Bale, who is having the season of his life.

The former Southampton trainee has been the heartbeat of the Spurs side this season and has contributed 15 league goals this campaign, as well as scoring 8 goals in his last 6 games in all competitions. If Arsenal can stop him, then they can stop Spurs.

It’s Friday. The North London Derby is all of two days away, if not less. So naturally, the time is right for an Arsene Wenger press conference to provoke outrage.

Mental strength

Before the offending quotes, we had the usual press conference bingo from Arsene. He described how Arsenal showed ‘strength’ to come back from the Bayern and Blackburn defeats and win against Aston Villa, even if it was ‘unconvincing’ in his own words.
