Arsene Wenger has been forced to play Mathieu Debuchy and Nacho Monreal out of their natural positions thanks to injuries to Laurent Koscielny. With a view of making up for the depleted squad at the heart of the Gunners’ defense, Arsene Wenger is now eyeing up a move for Schalke’s Benedikt Howedes.

The German international is exactly the type of player, whom the Gunners managers would hanker for given his height and versatility. His contract runs till the end of 2016/17 campaign and at £15 million, the Schalke captain comes off as a bargain. Besides, the Schalke defender’s age proves that he could be the Gunners’ anchor at defense for the seasons to come.

The 26-year-old has already represented Germany on thirty one occasions, let alone his youth appearances. In addition, he’s also been a part of Schalke side that play regularly in Europe. Taking his experience at the elite level into consideration, he’ll prove to be a valuable asset for the Emirates Stadium club.

Per Mertesacker is often slated for his inadequacy to cope up with the demands of Premier League football and he’s also been a subject of senescence as of late. One can expect his compatriot in Benedikt Howedes to demote him to the bench at Arsenal, if the transfer pulls through.

Arsenal will hope to escape from the wrath of injuries in the upcoming year and adding a world-class centreback to their roster could prove pivotal for their race to finish.

To re-sign a runaway Song is not the best. He will not put in his best, there are solid holding midfielders all over but not runaways

Don't hold your breath over any transfer rumour that involves monies of £15M plus, it's not the Wenger way in January, unless there is an injury crisis. Having said that, he would be an asset in our woeful defence, of four full backs and two centre backs. Wish we could also purchase a quality holding midfielder. Why did we not re-sign Song even on a lone deal.
