Arsenal are to offer defensive midfielder, Francis Coquelin a new long term deal at the Emirates, according to various reports.

This comes off the back of some outstanding performances over the last month. Coquelin has returned from a loan move from Charlton and has fought his way into the squad and has played in nearly every game since he has returned.

It comes as a relief to Arsenal fans, who have been worried following Arteta’s injury saga and Flamini’s inconsistency. Coquelin has grown into the role ahead of the defence and did a fantastic job on David Silva at the weekend against Manchester City.

Wenger is looking for some major changes to his midfield set up with Abou Diaby, Mathieu Flamini, Mikel Arteta and Coquelin’s contract running out at the end of the season.

According to The Telegraph Arteta is to be offered another one year deal with the club, while Coquelin’s deal is rumoured to be a four year deal. By the looks of it Abou Diaby will be allowed to leave the club once his contract runs out at the end of the season. Flamini is also believed to be allowed to leave the club in June following his second spell with the club.

Arsenal are already in the process of adding number to the midfield, with the imminent signing of Krystian Bielik from Legia Warsaw.

There are also rumours that the Gunners are to sign French international Morgan Schneiderlin at the end of the season with a deal possibly already in place to sign him.

If these deals do in fact go through, then Arsenal will certainly have great depth in midfield with plenty of options. All that is needed now is a centre back and the Gunners will be challenging for the title again by the looks of it.

I thought Flamini's contract doesn't expire until July 2016? Would be more than happy to release him for free this summer, although I doubt he'd have any suitable offers.

A month ago, I never would have expected to be happy for Coquelin to be offered a new deal, always thought he was a Championship player to be honest, but he has been excellent recently.

Providing we still upgrade our starting defensive minded midfielder in the summer (Schneiderlin or Lars Bender would be fine) i'll be satisfied. Hopefully we'll finally bite the bullet, accept the inevitable and let Diaby go. For all his talent, he'll never be available for long enough to be a good squad option. Pay the 10-12m and replace him with Moussa Sissoko or Sami Khedira (if he's available for free).
