Arsene Wenger today has given an update on the Arsenal squad before their game against Paul Lambert’s Aston Villa on Sunday.

He stated that the team have no new injury concerns except for Alexis Sanchez who has apparently picked up a hamstring injury. He went on to state that he will face a late fitness test. He also noted that Arsenal new boy Gabriel should be fit to be in the Arsenal squad:

“The squad will be exactly the same as last Sunday. The only uncertainty we have is Alexis who has a hamstring concern, and that will be decided on Saturday. He might be out for Sunday. The only [other] difference is that Gabriel is available and we’ll check him how he is physically but he should be alright to be available.”

He noted that Danny Welbeck is still out but nearing a return:

“Welbeck is very close. He is really, really, really nearly there. He will be available for the Tottenham game.”

He also gave mention to some of the Gunners’ more long term casualties. He stated that Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is nearing a return while our skipper, Arteta, is still out for some time:

“They are not completely there yet but they are not far. Jack should join in normal training in 10 days. Welbeck on Monday. That’s where we are at the moment. Arteta a bit longer.”

So it looks like Arsenal are at near full strength once again. They already have Walcott and Ozil back in the squad and now Welbeck and Wilshere are not far off.

My only worry is Alexis. We cannot afford for him to get a long term injury. If I was Wenger I’d rest him this weekend. We should have more than enough to turn over Villa at home without him. Make sure he has no hamstring problem as Arsenal have some big games coming up that could shape the rest of our season.

He needs the rest to be ready for spurs and the champs league to use him on Sunday could really back fire on us

With all the talent going forward (if fit) then there should be no reason to rest Alexis for this match. Remember the CL will be back soon, and a visit to arch rivals Spurs

As far as I am concerned no team should be underrated. The present trend should not be lost. Aston Villa can only be defeated with full strength. Please let us move out of the first six before we can talk of resting our magic boy, besides the season is far spent. Any loss can cost Arsenal Champions League next year. This is no time to gamble.

Alexis never wanted to be rested but maybe he should have been - against his will
