Arsenal grind out a win against the surprise package of the season so far, Southampton. Arsenal build on two wins to make it a third consecutive win as they look to build a run of form to push up the Premier League table and beat a team currently above them in the league for the first time this season.

The first half started slowly and didn’t prove to present many chances to either of the sides as both defences stayed strong and compact. Although chances were sparse, Welbeck missed a good chance after being played through by Santi Cazorla.

Southampton had arguably the most clear cut chance of the half as Pelle found himself behind the Arsenal defence, however rushed his shot as he blasted it over the crossbar. Welbeck again had another couple of chances to break the deadlock as his back heel was blocked and Fraiser Forster managed to make a fantastic reflex save from Welbeck’s deflected header.

Another slow start to the half saw impatience begin to grow among the Arsenal fans as the side struggled to create chances against Southampton who currently boast the best defensive record in the league campaign so far. Fans were disappointed to see in form Alex Oxlade Chamberlain replaced, meanwhile it proved to be a bold and positive decision from Wenger to bring Olivier Giroud as Arsenal searched for a goal and the three points at the Emirates Stadium.

Three points at last. Arsenal manage to win a Premier League game for the first time since the home win against Burnley at the start of November. The game saw a return for two Arsenal favourites, Olivier Giroud & Laurent Koscielny, who both started after a period served on the side-lines due to injury.

Arsenal dominated the first half play having eight shots compared to Albion’s zero. Santi Cazorla proved to be Arsenal’s most influential player as he created chances for Welbeck and Ramsey who came close to giving Arsenal a first half lead. Despite controlling the game, Arsenal could not find the target and were almost behind after a goalmouth scrap late in the first half which was eventually cleared. A first half which saw no goals also saw Nacho Monreal limp off with an injury to add to the growing list for Arsenal, and was replaced by Kieran Gibbs.

The second half started better for West Brom as they tried to come out and attack, and were harshly done by as Berahino, who was through on goal, was judged to be offside by the linesman, however the replays showing that Laurent Koscielny had kept the young English striker onside. Both sides continued to attack seeing an Aaron Ramsey shot scuffed over the bar after an improvised chipped through ball from Chambers, while Saido Berahino could only find the side netting with his shot.

Danny Welbeck's second half goal led Arsenal to a scrappy 1-0 win at the Hawthorns.

Pre-Match

Arsenal went into the game on the back of back-to-back league losses, which lead to their worst ever start to the Premier League. Bizarrely, before kick-off, Arsenal were only 2 points away from the 4th place, and the Champions League spot that comes with it.

Arsenal’s win on Wednesday night guaranteed their progression from the group stages of the Champions League for 15 consecutive year.

The hosts came into the game with only home win this season. The only West Brom player who had scored more than goal in the Premier League got arrested for drink-driving during midweek.

Arsenal made 5 changes from the team that lost to United last week. Injuries to Szczesny, Arteta and Wilshere mean Martinez, Cazorla and Flamini have been brought into the team. Long awaited returns for Koscielny and Giroud sees the French duo get their first starts since October and August respectively, leaving Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gibbs on the bench.

First Half

Good link up play between Chambers, Sanchez Welbeck and Cazorla in the 2nd minute ended in the Spaniard having a shot from range, which was directed straight at the keeper. 3 minutes later and Alexis grabbed the ball of the halfway line and powered forwards, beating a couple of men in a move which culminated in a tame shot, smothered by Foster.

Following a bitterly disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Manchester United in our last game, the Gunners turned it around tonight with an impressive 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund to end their 100% record so far this year in the Champions League.

Arsenal started brightly with a first Arsenal goal for 21-year-old Frenchman, Yaya Sanogo, who tucked the ball through Weidenfeller’s legs inside of two minutes following a back heel to Santi Cazorla who returned the ball to Sanogo with a clever reverse through pass.

Sanogo found himself through on goal again just minutes later, however failed to convert this time as he hesitated and was let down by a poor touch seeing the ball swept from his by a Dortmund defender.

Dortmund’s chances were certainly few and far between, however a crucial Kieran Gibbs tackle prevented Aubameyang from charging through to the Arsenal goal. A close range save from Emiliano Martinez kept Dortmund at bay late in the first half to see Arsenal progress in to the second half with a 1-0 lead.

As the late kick off drew to a close it was yet another disappointing afternoon. An undeserving result but Arsenal came away with no points.

Arsenal could have been 3-0 up within the first 25 minutes if it wasn’t for a superb David De Gea. Jack Wilshere had the best chance of the game but it was well saved by De Gea but in all fairness Wilshere should have scored.

It was evident in the first 25 minutes that Arsenal were pressing high and sniffing blood but just couldn’t make the break through and this was a combination of poor finishing and brilliant goalkeeping.

The second half was no different in terms of the better team as Arsenal started the 2nd very much the same.
