Just as the goalkeeping debate settles down, somebody steps in and reignites it. This time it’s Arsenal legend David Seaman, who isn’t sure who will claim the number 1 jersey on a full-time basis for Arsenal.
Right now Lukas Fabianski is looking fairly confident between the sticks, while Wojciech Sczceszny lies in wait for any slip-ups, with suggestions that another keeper will come in.
Former England stopper Seaman had this to say on the matter: “Arsenal’s a massive club and you’re under so much pressure all the time and it can sometimes get to the younger goalkeepers.
“I don’t know if Szczesny will win back his spot. It’s quite interesting with Fabianski doing really well.
He’s worked really hard since his injury and he looks a totally different goalkeeper. But it’s great to have that competition.”
As well as the ongoing battle between the two Poles, there’s also talk Barcelona’s Victor Valdes will come in to add an experienced head.
"I want to try new cultures, new football, new challenges," he says, and Arsenal are definitely keen, though the Spaniard has committed a few gaffes of late and has had his strength questioned, especially with balls coming into the box.
Whether or not Valdes would acclimatise to the Premier League is one question. Fortunately, if he doesn’t then there will be at least one young hungry Polish goalkeeper to take his place.
Arsenal keen on Kouyate? Try the other way round
Anderlecht’s Cheikhou Kouyate has, for the third window in a row, attempted to link himself with a move to Arsenal. For the last year or so, Sky Sports come out with a story talking about how Arsenal are interested, about how he is keen to move and Arsenal are looking to improve their defence.
I’ve no doubt the Senegalese is keen. He and his agent would love him to move to Arsenal, but chances are it isn’t happening. Never has anything emerged of the interest he claims, and the fact no other major European teams have plucked him from the Belgian side suggests he may not be the prize he wants himself to be.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see these links emerge again, until he eventually does leave Anderlecht, to join a rather less Arsenal-like side.
