Arsenal are ready to revive their interest in Swansea defender Ashley Williams after their injury problems mounted, forcing the hand of Arsene Wenger to spend some of the money available to him.

Fans have been left frustrated by Wenger’s inability to spend during this summer window but may now get their wish as he finally looks to remove the shackles and buy some players.

Williams the man

Several sources have indicated that Gunners scouts watched the Welsh international on Thursday night against Malmo and they would have been impressed with the 28-years-old performance, albeit against weak opposition.

He was commanding all-night and strong defensively. He is seen as the type of player Arsenal’s ever improving defence needs.

In addition to this he would be eligible to play in the Champions League as the Europa League qualifier on Thursday night doesn’t cup tie him.

Williams also endeavored himself to Gunners fans last December when he blasted the ball at ex-player Robin van Persie from close range.

Injury crisis

Arsenal have several defensive injuries and this has meant it is a deal that the north London club would like to seal quickly.

Thomas Vermaelen is out for six weeks with a back problem and Spanish full back Nacho Monreal only returned to training last week, so may miss the start of the season.

Swansea were initially looking for £10 million to sell their club captain but it is believed by John Cross of the Mirror that this has lowered to £8.5 million and Wenger has given the deal the go ahead.

Gervinho and Chamakh departure

The Daily Mail’s Simon Jones believes two Arsenal attackers could be exiting the club shortly, news which will please Gunners fans.

Marouane Chamakh, who was on loan at West Ham last season, looks set for another London loan with new boys Crystal Palace hoping to tie up a season-long loan deal for the Moroccan international.

Also Gervinho is edging closer to a move. Different fees have been reported but the Mail believes Arsenal want £8 million for the Ivorian.

Roma director Walter Sabatini was in London yesterday and it looks like Gervinho will be exiting the Emirates soon.

T.C - not happening sorry. I would bet my house on it. Wouldn't be surprised, with the team Swansea have got now if we finish above Arsenal. We are getting stronger. Be afraid very afraid :-))

10 million isn't enough, so why would we be "prepared" to except 8.5 all of a sudden? ?? Total no storey, Williams just been handed the captaincy and will be going nowhere! !! Especially on the cheap !!!

He will leave the Jacks for a better team and Williams knows it, say good-by to Swansea Williams and welcome aboard.

Can't see it happening sorry mate, loving the fact that a massive :-) side like Arsenal are desperate to sign one of little old Swansea's finest! P.s..... When did you last win any silverware ?:-D

Arsenal need a reliable gk, a quality centre half, midfield destroyer and a proven scorer.
Stop the fancy football and million passes before shooting and go direct. If it's the same tip tap dance soccer, get ready for another trophy drought. Then Wenger will have to go.

Is that the same Mirror that said Williams was about to join Liverpool a couple of months ago and the same Mirror that said Laudrup was obout to resign and had agreed to join PSG. Or is it the same Mirror that said Michu was off to Arsenal then said Livrpool when that rumour didn't materialise. Don't hold your breath
