Brazilian international midfielder Luis Gustavo has chosen to stay in Germany, joining Wolfsburg from Bayern Munich for a fee thought to be around €20million.

The player had publicly revealed his love of the Premier League and singled out Arsenal as a club with “great tradition”, at the height of the Gunners interest.

Yet just like many others, Gustavo has chosen to pack up and set up camp elsewhere.

Once again, the Arsenal faithful and Twitter were vocal on the transfer:

@JamesDallESPN “Luiz Gustavo to sign for Wolfsburg for a fee of €15 million, says the German media. Fine timing for Arsenal what with Mikel Arteta's injury.”

@HEOkike “Gustavo gone! Twitter meltdown expected soon #AFC”

@_don_cross_AFC “Gustavo joins an ambitious team. Good for him. 5-year deal with Wolfsburg.”

@KevTimoney “Gustavo signs for Wolfsburg. Another player missed. F*cking sort it out wenger and get players in. Getting frustrating. #AFC #SPEND”

@MitchJFranco10 “Soo .... there goes Gustavo ... #Afc”

@jesperthem “WTF.. Can we please sign someone, anyone?! Gustavo to Wolfsburg..  #AFC #signsomeonewenger #arsenal”

@jean23k “Ok so #Arsenal #AFC lose out to a mid table team in the race to sign #Gustavo They definitely are aiming for 5th #NotAHappyGooner”

@AdamMazrani “what a lovely story to wake up, Wolfsburg, a non-CL club, completing the signing of Gustavo. farcical from #AFC”

@Polo91_AFC “Now that Gustavo is off. Just Bring in Fellaini pay the 30 million just do it”

@AK_AFC “So we miss out on Gustavo. Not our fault though, lots of unlucky circumstances. But still painful considering his fee.”

@BillyCampbell11 “So the Champions League regulars (also rans) Arsenal lose out to the might of Wolfsburg (11th last yr) in the race for Luis Gustavo. #afc”

@Katles25 “Wolfsburg over Arsenal, then u know that quality players don't believe in Wenger no more”

@davecurran1984 “Can't believe gustavo joined Wolfsburg over @Arsenal we have nearly 2m more twitter followers”

This has been a disastrous summer transfer season for us - much worse than the 8 poor previous ones. Long past time for Wenger to go, and he can take Gazidis with him. This race to mediocrity started with Dave Dein's ouster and it gets worse each year. I'm glad that when my turn came up (twice) on the season ticket waiting lists, I declined. I just feel sorry for the poor sods who pour money into the club year after year. Maybe I shouldn't - after all it's their money and their choice.

The worst part is its not that we don't attract players. Higuian and Gustavo both stated they preferred arsenal over the opposite, yet Wenger was always too cheap to cash out the few million in difference. It's sad.

Or could it be connected to the fact that the chairman of VW, who own wolfsburg, is also on the board of Bayern an spent the last 2 weeks, while with Bayern on tour, tapping him up??
