Arsenal’s disastrous start to the season against Aston Villa seemed almost inevitable. The team, already down to the bare bones, due to a combination of a summer clear out, a lack of arrivals and injuries, was, despite a decent start, outplayed by Paul Lambert’s young side.

The performance highlighted many areas that even the most optimistic of fans would agree need improvement. Most significantly perhaps was the shocking goalkeeping and defending seen throughout, especially with Carl Jenkinson ten yards inside the Aston Villa half as our last man for the last goal.

Aside from the defensive shortcomings, the game confirmed that a central midfielder should be the number one priority this summer. Aaron Ramsey joined Mikel Arteta on the sidelines, leaving Jack Wilshere and Emmanuel Frimpong as the only possibilities in defensive midfield.

Pogba

On Monday several reports have suggested that Arsene Wenger is attempting to address the midfield situation, after concentrating on strikers so far this summer. Whilst Wenger remains an admirer of Lars Bender, it has been reported that Arsene has rekindled his interest in Paul Pogba.

Pogba is exactly the player Arsenal need. Tall, athletic, young, powerful and technically sound; a new Patrick Vieira. Despite starting only sporadically for Juventus since his move from Manchester United last year, the French international remains very much part of Antonio Conte’s plans, with Paulo Bandini suggesting it would take a lot more than the supposed £20m to get Pogba.

Cabaye

Arsenal’s interest in Pogba is yet to materialise into a bid, though there has been a concrete bid for another French international midfielder. The highly-rated 27 year-old Yohan Cabaye has attracted much interest across Europe, notably from PSG and Man Utd. Today however he was the subject of a derisory £10 million bid from Arsenal.

The bid was swiftly rejected by Newcastle, and it seems the bid would have to be doubled if Arsenal are to get there man. Cabaye nevertheless merits the attention and Arsenal should persist in their pursuit of the playmaker.

Though by trade a defensive midfielder, Cabaye possesses great vision and technical ability, and a powerful long range shot. He would bring Premier League experience and a much needed injection of quality, whilst alleviating the pressure on Arteta. At 27, he is also entering his prime.

With Man Utd, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea starting strongly, and all declaring they are not yet finished in the transfer window, it is essential that Arsenal recruit in the next few days, and Pogba and Cabaye would both be welcome additions.

Another lucky penalty!!!. You would need a good memory for the last one Tottenham were awarded because they didn't get any at all last season. Scraped a one nil win!!!!. Always in control despite having 4 new signings on show. How did your new signings play against the Villa. Typical short sighted comments. 2 definite pens and a very poor defensive display by the Arsenal. Plenty of time to put it right though

Real G.. are you Arsene Wenger..

Liverpool battered Stoke and won.. Spurs look solid and Chelsea won in second gear..

What planet are you living in mate.. ur in cloud cuckoo land..

And to sum it all up.. your penalty save meant it was a flukey goal yet Liverpool's penalty save meant they got lucky..

UNBELIEVABLE JEFF!

Yeah I watched Tottenham game, Chelsea game and Man U game. Didn't see the Liverpool game but when I say start strongly I mean winning or losing as that's what it's about at the end of the day.

Against Villa we were not too bad at the beginning, which I acknowledged in the article, but at the end of the a strong performance is not about controlling possession, you have to eliminate errors and to me, Szczesny made a mistake for the first, defensively we were weak for the second and terrible for the third.

A lot of it was down to not having any protection in defensive midfield. The ref was bad but you can't blame everything no him, we have to look at ourselves as well.

I was very impressed by Spurs to be honest, and Man United. Chelsea might have been 'terrible and boring' in the second half but they were two up and you have to remember Mourinho is back so he's going to make them effective in those situations. I'd rather have been boring and won 1-0.

Outplayed by Villa? lol ..did you watch the game mate?? You mean outplayed by the ref! The first goal, our keeper got unlucky with the rebound after a brilliant pen save! The 2nd goal shouldn't have even been a pen! the 3rd goal happened when ALL our 10 men (shoulda had 11 men!!) were in their area trying desperately to score and we got hit on a counter attack! Hardly outplayed!! Just really unlucky!
Then you say Liverpool, Spurs and Chelski started strongly?? I'm guessing you didn't watch those games either? Liverpool got lucky with a pen save! So coulda easily been a 1-1 draw!! Spurs scraped a 1 nil win (another lucky penalty!!) against an awful newly promoted team? (well strong!!) and Chelsea had a really good 1st half but were terrible and boring in the 2nd half!! Again to a rubbish newly promoted team!! Only Man U played well and started 'strongly'!!!
Apart from that..would be awesome to see Pogba or Kebab at the Arsenal!
