After the disappointing start to the season we’re apparently making bids for players now, Cabaye for £10.2mil and if you believe twitter a €20mil bid for Pogba.

While as a combination that’d be a great set of signings I think there are smarter deals to be done and knowing Wenger, he’s probably looking at how we can make smart deals for players, well listen up.

It’s no doubt that we need at least 4/5 in with our current lack of depth so here are some options that personally I think would all be valuable additions.

We need a goalkeeper, right back, centre back or someone to cover both (risky but a likely option), a defensive midfielder, a creative spark or goal scoring midfielder (not having a Frank Lampard esc midfielder is making me sick), a winger and undoubtedly a striker.

Goalkeeper

Well, let’s just say Woj has been far from convincing I don’t know much about this area but some names about are Guaita from Valencia, if you believe some of the things ITK’s say on twitter, we have representatives in Spain to talk to him this week.

Which would be excellent, he’s 26 and ready to be a number 1. He’s pushing the current Valencia number 1 hard so a move to the Premier League would probably appeal I’d make him our number 1.

Woj needs to be challenged, otherwise his errors will continue to flow, it happened with Lehman and Almunia, unprecedented number 1 has made him lacklustre. Guaita’s fee will be probably in the range of £6mil-£10mil.

Right Back

Well there’s been a few names banded about recently, personally there are 2 players I’d like to see, Micah Richards (despite his injury problems) or Juanfran.

There’s not much to say about Micah Richards, he can attack well from full back and is an absolute powerhouse of a player, he fits the bill with Wenger as he can play centre back as well.

Micah is on the fringes at City and is a boyhood Arsenal fan. If we were to move for him there’s a lot in our favour, it’s just the cost. Any offer will be a profit for City as Richards came up through their youth system. £7mil-£10mil is likely to be considered.

As for Juanfran, well he’s a converted winger much like Jordi Alba of Barca. So naturally, he’s very comfortable going forward but is positionally sound at the back.

The question is whether he’d come or not, he’s at Atletico now and they’re pushing hard now in Spain to make it a 3 horse race, despite Simeone’s comments at the weekend.

So would Juanfran consider a move to a more competitive league? Personally we can only speculate. We are probably looking £10mil-£15mil for Juanfran.

For me I’d take Micah, personally he’d be an absolute perfect signing.

Centre Back

So centre backs’ I say, just offer the money for Ashley Williams. Get it done, for me it’s a no brainer.

He’s at the age where he needs to make the step up now or miss his opportunity. Williams will probably cost about £10-£12mil and has proven himself in the Premiership so hopefully, fingers crossed this can happen.

Signing Williams would be a clever move as he wouldn’t expect to come in and be first choice, but he’d come in and fight for a place and push everyone harder, and that’s exactly what we need.

Defensive Midfield

Like at centre back I have 1 name for this position, Fernando from FC Porto.

We’ve been crying out for a defensive midfielder like him. He breaks up play and starts the team moving forward, he’s the player who sits and lets the rest attack.

Also, has the nickname, the Octopus, how can you not want a player with that nickname?

Fernando is now a dual-national, Portuguese-Brazilian and looks set to be getting called up into the Portugal national team. So what can we offer?

Well, Portuguese league to the Premier League would be seen as a step up in standard and we can like all the players suggested so far, get him for £10mil-£15mil. For me this is the smartest signing Wenger could make with regards to defensive midfield.

The offer for Cabaye is an interesting , as it smacks of much the same from Wenger rather than pushing the boat out, after all in 2012 he said the role of the defensive midfielder was dead, him saying that I would question just where he’s looking at for players.

Attacking Midfield

Right this is where I go a bit out there, everyone bangs about Eriksen at Ajax and yes we can afford him I know that and yes he’d be my first choice but that’s not the point of this article, there’s another that I’m thinking, Siem De Jong a genuine goal scoring midfielder.

His record for Ajax is 50 goals in 150 appearances, 1 goal in 3 games, not bad for a midfielder! Siem de Jong would be another player that’s a valuable addition to the side, he’s the current captain at Ajax so he’s a clear leader, and we need that sort of character in our squad.

I think we can get both de Jong and Eriksen after all Denis Bergkamp is working at Ajax and would recommend us should we go in for the players. Eriksen is obviously going to cost £30mil-£35mil and Siem de Jong probably £15mil-£20. But sticking to my point, de Jong is another smart bit of business in my opinion.

Striker

Right, the bit everyone loves, the goal scorers. Olivier Giroud well we can’t ask for much more, 1 game 1 goal. I have faith in him but we do definitely need either a different option for when it’s not working or to just offer £55million for Suarez and get on with it. Previously, I’ve written about alternatives and 2 of my 3 are no longer options; Soldado to Spurs and Osvaldo to Southampton (SOUTHAMPTON FOR GOD SAKE).

So here we go, I have 3 options, all offer something different to Giroud; Jackson Martinez, Luiz Adriano and Luuk de Jong.

Jackson Martinez, FC Porto would probably cash in on him if the right offer came in. Jackson Martinez is the best of the 3 options and has a prolific record.

He’d provide a lot of pace in behind whereas Giroud is a hold up player the big thing for us is should we get champions league football we’ll be seen as a step up. Jackson Martinez is probably the most expensive with a release clause at £35million.

Luiz Adriano, much like Jackson Martinez is in the position of the player would consider it a step up should we qualify for the group stages of the champions league. Luiz Adriano has champions league experience with Shakhtar Donetsk and has a great record for the club; 53 goals in 122 games, roughly 1 in 2, a complete poacher. A fee of around £20million is likely for Luiz Adriano’s signature.

Now this is where I’m pushing the boat out, Luuk de Jong. This is more of a circumstantial signing, if we signed Siem de Jong, Luuk’s older brother would give you I think the advantage of having that brotherly connection on the pitch, an in depth understanding of the other’s game.

Luuk de Jong would be the cheapest option out of the lot, he signed for Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012 for £12.6mil so we’re looking at offering £15mil to interest his club in selling after a year.

For me I’d take them in that specific order of discussion, Martinez and Adriano are goal machines and de Jong’s getting better and better.

What about Fellaini? Belgian international not good enough for Arsenal in the destructive defensive midfield player a la Vieira?? As for strikers, Drogba showed in the Emirates Cup that he still has football in him, so would a winner like Eto'o not come in handy with a minimum of 25 goals per season?

The best "smart business" would be to get shot of Wenger - eight years of complete failure. Time for some fresh ideas i.e. signing players...

I know this has been discussed at length, but the summer of 2 years ago was a disgrace and should never have been allowed to happen, and now again we find ourselves desperate for players. Right now Gervinho and Arshavin would have come in handy!

Personally, I'd love Jackson Martinez, or Burak Yilmaz. Ibrahimovic? He won't like Cavani for competition. I certainly don't want to spend £25m on Michu. What I fear is that we will end up spending the £70m after all, but it will be on players very much like Arteta and Mertersaker. Don't get me wrong, they are solid players, but they won't drag you to the next level. We just got rid of a load of players rated 5/10, please don't go out and buy another bunch after we saved our pennies for so long!

Depending on the seriousness of Kompany's injury, I really can't see Man City selling Richards, with Lescott being their only recognised fit centre back. Can you?!
