Gunners midfielder Aaron Ramsey and manager Arsène Wenger have deservedly been named the Barclays player and manager of the month for September.

Arsenal won all four of their league games in September – against Tottenham, Sunderland, Stoke and Swansea – rising to the top of the table, with Ramsey shining and scoring four goals in the process.

The award caps Ramsey’s return to form and fitness following a double fracture of his right tibia and fibula sustained in February 2010, caused by a shocking tackle by Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross.

Speaking recently about Ramsey’s return from that injury, Wenger said:

“It took him a long time to get completely over that [injury], especially in duels, in fights [for the ball]. He was resistant to go into the fights for a long, long time but now he’s over it. He had a difficult period last season where people became a little bit impatient with him. He lost confidence and sometimes, if you give the players a little rest, it can rebuild their confidence. They can think about their game and come back stronger and that's what happened to him.”

Ramsey himself said:

“I never feared that I wouldn’t return. I felt it was always there. I just needed to believe again and get that confidence. I had a lot of support from friends and family, and I had the trust that the manager put in me. All these things added up over a period of time. You have to keep believing and working hard, and it just clicks all of a sudden and you are full of confidence.”

Ramsey is currently with the Wales squad prior to their World Cup qualifiers against Macedonia and Belgium.

October cursed?

This is the 13th occasion on which Wenger has won the manager of the month award, the most recent previous month being February 2012.

While the awards are hard earned and well deserved – the biggest argument for the judging panel is likely to have been which of several Arsenal players in superb form should actually receive the accolade – every fan will be hoping that the curse of the awards, which are often believed to lead to a downturn in form the next month.

The club’s October league campaign got off to a solid but unspectacular start with a 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion last weekend.

The current international break means that the team has to wait until 19 October for its next Premier League fixture, at home to Norwich City.
