Arsenal and Manchester United have held preliminary talks with the representatives of the Porto striker Jackson Martinez.

In Demand

Rated at around £30 million, Martinez is being chased by the Gunners Premier League rivals Manchester United, while European sides Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Roma are thought to have contacted his agent over a potential move.

Speaking to La FM, the striker hinted that he is in the dark over his immediate future, but would be willing to consider a big money move away from Portugal.

“I do not know what will happen. I have a contract for two more years with Porto and I know there is interest from several clubs.”

"It's normal if a player is playing well, but I have always respected my contracts. Only time will tell what will happen."

Born to be a Gunner

It is thought that Martinez would prefer to join the Gunners given the option, as he has previously claimed in interviews that he followed the North London club growing up.

Regardless of the players wishes, the 27-year-old may find himself being priced out of a dream summer transfer, his 60 goals in 91 appearances inflating his price tag to more than Arsenal would be willing to spend.

Alexis Sanchez’ arrival in Arsène Wenger’s squad has given the manager the satisfaction that his forward line is strong enough to compete with the clubs immediate league rivals.

Too little, too late

If the hierarchy decide another player is needed, or there is an unexpected departure, Arsenal may decide to revive their interest in a cheaper option such as Loic Remy.

Martinez has been linked with the Gunners for years, but after the signing of Chilean World Cup star Sanchez, it is likely that there will be no more business in the attacking department this summer.

We welcome Alexis Sanchez,a quality strike addition to the Gunners. Wenger should not however, relent is adding further strike force, defensive and offensive midfield players, top defenders to make the team formidable. Wenger should always remember what injuries did to the teams ambition last season and make provisions for the rainy day. I trust he will spend wisely for the 100m Puma transfer wallet. Up Gunners.

Who says?

Wenger is no mug now he can spend I think you will see him add more quality and quantity to the squad, for a long time if a player was injured we had no-one of comparable quality I think he will start to address that situation this season.

Looked like a glorified Yaya Sanogo at the World Cup. £30m would be a huge waste of money.
