As part of an attempt to tie down their new English core of young players, Arsenal are discussing new contracts with a number of players, including Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kieran Gibbs and Theo Walcott, though the latter of course has hit a large snag.

These reports surfaced a while ago, but little seems to have occurred, leading to fears that another set of contract sagas would ensue.

However, some headway has now been made and there could be a storm of new contracts.

Ramsey

The much-maligned Welshman is still highly rated by Arsenal insiders, who believe he is simply lacking confidence.

Regardless of how you feel about Ramsey, he's a decent enough squad player, especially when not played out of position, and his deal is more likely a contract extension than a new deal, so a pay rise is unlikely; although there may be performance bonuses.

Captain Jack?

Jack Wilshere is naturally seen as the future of Arsenal, and will be receiving a large pay rise, along with a contract running until 2018. Some reports have suggested he will be made captain of Arsenal within 18 months, and is certainly the next in line for the role, long-term at least.

This will come as a relief, as some Gooners, after recent form, were worried he may have become unhappy at the club and begun seeking exits. Fortunately, that doesn't seem the case, especially at the moment.

Contracts for Gibbs and Oxlade-Chamberlain could follow shortly, meaning Arsenal will at least have one group of loyal players, even if times become very hard (hopefully not).

I feel Arsenal's problem mainly is the way Wenger approches his players. At times you have to be strong on them to give good performance.Look at Sir Alex and Man utd.

Thousands of Arsenal supporter can see that Ramsey is not up to it. He is then to be offered a new contract, go figure! If he was a Man Utd player putting in those kind of performances do you think he would still be in the first team? This is the kind of thing that makes Arsenal soft. How many years do we have to say "potential" without any improvement. Don't renew the contract for Ramsey and see what offers we get.

Can,t agree, it is this acceptance of inferior players like Ramsay that has led us to the garbage we produce as a so called team. The fact that Jack Wilshere is clearly streets ahead of any other Arsenal player after only a few games says everything most of the rest are just not good enough.

Although I'm happy to commend Ramsey for his efforts to regain fitness following his horrific injury ;I feel that he isn't good enough to be part of the Arsenal first team squad. His abilities on the pitch mirror those of the "on-loan" Denilson and a contract extension would place him in a similar position-Impossible to off-load when required due to a salary agreement out of sinc with other club's valuation of the player.
