The order of the day at Arsenal is a new goalkeeper, at least this week, and it looks like Arsenal are looking to Europe to secure theirs.

What’s amusing to see is the conflicting information in the reports, but there’s likely some truth in both.

Marchetti

Lazio’s Federico Marchetti is being seriously considered. The 30 year-old was almost signed when he was at Cagliari, but ultimately no deal materialised.

He’s experienced but not so old as to need replacing in a few years time. One of a few valid options (though it’s not hard to enter the ‘better than Valdes’ bracket).

Adler

One to watch out for is Hamburg’s Rene Adler. The German was number 1 for Germany before his injury and can challenge Manuel Neuer when at his best. Hamburg would accept a bid of around £8 million, which is far more reasonable than the £15 million mooted for the likes of Mignolet and Begovic.

Arsenal have sent scouts to watch him almost weekly, which is a sign of a move being seriously considered. At only 28 he’d be a sure-fire Number 1.

Other goalkeepers will be linked, but these two would be excellent signings. Which probably means they won’t join. Is Sebastien Frey still around...?

any players coming out of the Bundesliga will probably cost a small fortune, as long as we look anywhere but France for new signings?!! Belgium seems to be the hotbed of creative footballers at the mo, or the Slav countries they're bound to be cheap hunting grounds?

I think Tuesday night was a reminder on why we shouldn't sign Valdes. It would be Almunia mark 2 but not as good. Adler would be the best of the players linked. Signing any German player at the moment is smart business.
