Arsenal have registered a surprise interest in West Ham United centre-back Winston Reid.

The New Zealand defender has been impressive for the Hammers as they finished the Premier League campaign, their first since promotion, in tenth place. West Ham’s mean defence was a large factor in this, and Reid stood out as a key part.

Backup

The interest was confirmed by Tor-Kristian Karlsen, a former chief scout and sporting director with information from around the footballing world.

Reid has only two years left on his contract, leaving West Ham with a decision whether to renew it or let him leave.

Obviously Reid isn’t a world-class defender, or a signing that will impress people, but he would be a solid fourth-choice defender behind Mertesacker, Koscielny and Vermaelen. Of course, if he’s replacing Vermaelen as third-choice that’s less than ideal, but we’ll have to see what happens with the captain this summer.

Arsenal could be chasing Reid as a younger alternative to Ashley Williams. Either way, they appear set on adding a Prem-experienced centre-back to their ranks before the transfer window is over.

actually reid proved this year he is a world class defender, and is probably better than anything you currently have i think you should watch him a little more before you make judgement

World Class? No. Better than Gunners defenders (top 3 def)? HELL NO! Kos is Twice the man! Maybe you should watch more football to know what world class means, and its not found around bubbles!

Reid is a physical player and has played well alonalongside the likes of ryan nelsen at the last world cup. He has a lot of talent and is a very strong player. Good in the air and provides a more defensive option at fullback. Not quote first team material yet but definitely has potential.

reid played alongside qpr's nelsen with NZ at the world cup when they held italy to a scoreless draw - two other draws against xx and xx indicate quality defence...
he is poker-style relaxed, scores at top level including at the world cup against slovakia, and has recently been hammers captain. doubt we want to see him go

Reid has signed a 2 year extension to his contract

His contract was about to expire and West Ham have invoked a two-year extension clause.
So two years left... fact?

Just some facts for you, Reid has signed a 2 year extension to his contract so we haven't got to decide anything. And he is smart enough to know he will get first team football at West Ham.

He would only leave West Ham for a chance of winning trophies too.
