Arsenal's convincing win over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday has come exactly one year after the infamous 8-2 thrashing they suffered at the hands of Manchester United at Old Trafford.

After having lost Cesc Fabregas, Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri to Barcelona and Manchester City respectively, Arsenal struggled to cope with the departures and at this early stage in the campaign had already conceded a staggering 10 goals, managing just one point from their opening 3 games.

A year on … having lost two arguably more influential players in Robin Van Persie and Alex Song, Arsenal have amassed a total of five points, are currently unbeaten in the Premier League and most significantly have kept 3 clean sheets!

In the aftermath of the transfer window deadline, after all the dust has settled, the only signing that was made by Arsenal was a 17 year old Macedonian goalkeeper. Typically Wenger. It is becoming increasingly difficult to understand the reasons behind the club’s relative inactivity during transfer windows despite the fact it is publicly known that there is money available.

Wenger, notoriously quiet with regards to his transfer business, clearly believes that this squad is good enough to compete for the title and in Europe. Of course the FA Cup isn’t going to be overlooked but the first two are surely Wenger’s main priorities.

Arsenal brought in three excellent players this window, but there’s frustration that they failed to add more. There were a fair few players signed by other teams that Arsenal perhaps should have considered, and who would have improved the squad. I’m only going to talk about reasonably priced players, no Eden Hazards here.

1.    Moussa Dembele (Spurs, 15m)

The Belgian midfielder was a target for Arsenal and United, with him apparently keen to go to the Emirates early in the window. However, no such move materialised, and Spurs met his buyout clause to replace Luka Modric.

The transfer window shut yesterday, with a bang for some teams, and with a whimper for others. Arsenal were firmly in the “whimper” category.

That’s not to say Arsenal were inactive. They did their business early, bringing in Podolski, Giroud and Cazorla by early August. At the time it seemed like a bold statement of intent, and could still be viewed as such, but the departures of Robin Van Persie and Alex Song (him in particular) gave a bitter taste at the end of the window.

It looks like Arsenal aren’t going to sign anyone today. If they do, it will have been the stealthiest transfer since transfers began. Even Arsenal wouldn’t be able to keep a transfer this quiet.

Arsene Wenger is clearly happy with the squad he has, which may or may not be the right decision. But I trust him to know what’s right for Arsenal more than, say, most fans.
