Arsenal brought in three excellent players this window, but there’s frustration that they failed to add more. There were a fair few players signed by other teams that Arsenal perhaps should have considered, and who would have improved the squad. I’m only going to talk about reasonably priced players, no Eden Hazards here.
1. Moussa Dembele (Spurs, 15m)
The Belgian midfielder was a target for Arsenal and United, with him apparently keen to go to the Emirates early in the window. However, no such move materialised, and Spurs met his buyout clause to replace Luka Modric.
As a combative yet creative player, he would have competed with Diaby for the second pivot role in our midfield, providing the box to box element as opposed to Arteta’s sitting. At 15m he would have been helpful, but he’s a Spud now...
2. Clint Dempsey (Spurs, 6m)
I’m sensing a trend here. Another Fulham player who Arsenal were interested in, he could have provided goals and an option on the wing for Arsenal while our overseas strikers settled in. With that said he’s not nearly as good as the pair of them, and Spurs need was greater than ours, as they sold Van der Vaart back to Hamburg.
3. Marko Marin (Chelsea, 7m)
While a bit of a lightweight, Marin would have provided a more creative option on the wing, similar to Benayoun last year. He’s nippy though, and has bags of tricks. I feel he’ll likely be wasted at Chelsea, and won’t play much. Ho hum. At least he’s getting paid.
4. Shinji Kagawa (Man United, 13m)
Thankfully remedied by the purchase of Santi Cazorla, Arsenal apparently had a bid accepted by Dortmund as well as United, but he chose United because of the more personal touch Fergie had used. Which is odd. He’s probably not as creative as Santi, but he’ll score a lot more goals. And we like goals. They’re great. His wages aren’t exorbitant at United either. The player I’m most upset we missed out on.
5. Javi Garcia (Manchester City, 16m)
A great DM at a fairly bargain price, Arsenal were interested in the former Madrid man but yet again chose not to pursue him for monetary concerns (I say Arsenal, I don’t mean Arsene, I mean them upstairs). I was surprised City went for him, but he’ll be excellent for them. A great replacement for Song, with CL experience. Ho well....
You might disagree. Feel free to. But those are the players I personally wish we’d signed. Not all of them. Just a couple. Not greedy.
