Stan Collymore is one in a line of football pundits currently voicing their opinion that this Arsenal team are simply not equipped to win the title this year. There are three key factors that form this viewpoint, which will be examined.

We don’t have the defensive cover

A view that has long existed when examining the Arsenal squad over the past 4/5 years is that there simply isn’t the defensive quality and quantity to challenge for the title while also competing in numerous other competitions throughout the season.

The current squad only has 3 recognised centre-backs and although it can be said all 3 are of international standard, it is worrying that there are not more options available, even from the youth squad. Miguel and Djourou were deemed surplus to requirements this season and so have been farmed out on loan, leaving only Vermaelen as cover with the unorthodox option of Sagna as fourth choice.

Sagna as centre-back also means Jenkinson at right-back and although I think Corporal Jenkinson has something about him to be a top player in the future, I wouldn’t like to see him in the starting line-up for tough games like Chelsea away or worse; Barcelona.

We don’t have the enough firepower up top

Although the vast majority of Arsenal fans are happy with the exploits of
Giroud this season, the same cannot be said for our only other real striker – Nicklas Bendtner.

It must be noted that once Podolski and Walcott return to full fitness they provide a larger pool of strikers in the squad however if you want to challenge for the title you really need more than one centre forward who can hit the 20+ goals. Do Walcott, Podolski or Bendtner (no chance) offer that? Worryingly it doesn’t look like it.

We don’t have the experience of winning

The most annoying phrase to hear in my opinion as an Arsenal fan is that the current squad don’t have any experience of winning and so will find it hard to grind out result during the climax of the title run-in.

Previous seasons, particularly 2007-08 are a clear example of this, where the incident at Birmingham led to the title charge running out of steam at the final hurdle. When you compare the experience of winning to the squads of Manchester United & Chelsea, we are quite some way behind.

All is not lost

These points certainly raise valid issues, to an extent, although what is great about this season is that nobody thinks we can win the title – that can be a massive advantage. Looking back at the 1997-98 season, the bookmakers were so assured Manchester united would take the title they stopped taking bets on them by Christmas to become champions that year. We all know what happened next; the Arsenal overturned a huge 12 point lead to bring the title back to Highbury and secure one half of a joyous double.

To be honest, as an Arsenal fan I’m quite enjoying being even linked to a title challenge, something we haven’t had for a few years now.

Let us not also forget that while the ‘Wenger Out’ twitter chumps have mysteriously vanished, in my opinion ‘Arsene knows’ and what I like to think we’ll see is a new face or two come the January transfer window, to react to issues with squad depth highlighted from August to December.

So my message is this; don’t get riled up, annoyed, mental, angry or darn right psychotic with these pundits dismissing an arsenal title win – they don’t get it right every time. “You don’t win anything with kids”.

This must be the most ludicrous argument of the lot. If this was the case surely the likes of Chelski (when mourhino first came), mancity last year but one, and blackburn rovers(99?) would never have one the PL. Ironically and rather interestingly the same pundits claim started claiming Spurs are genuine title contenders after they splashed out on a whole team this season! where is their experience? the problem is we listen to ex footballers so keenly thinking they understand football as much as they could play it. the fact that most of them never make it in even lower league management clearly shows that is not always the case. the likes of michael owen - who seems to think through his horse's head!

Stan Collymore is a low life who despite a very dodgy personal cv has managed to blag his way into a media role.
Arsenal have continued to attract negative media coverage despite attempting to run our club on a sane financial basis and playing good football.
The strange thing is that ex-players have been the most scathing in their comments about the club especially Alan Smith and Stewart Robson who just love to slag off the club.
My thoughts are to say very little and to hope that this great club will remain top of the league come the summer.

Good article and yeah, where are all the 'wenger out' ***s gone?? ...just like I thought they were all GLORY supporters and as soon as the Arsenal are top of the league and we sign a player they've actually heard of, who cost lots of money, they all disappear? Or start acting like actual supporters and love the club, players AND manager again!

In the dictionary, glory supporter should say as an example - 'wenger out' arsenal 'fans' are a perfect example of the meaning of this phrase!

Even their champion, their leader, their twitter spokesperson - Piers Morgan only has nice things to say about Arsenal now!

In fact I've just had a great idea...can any 'wenger out' *** reading this (if any still exist) please start wearing 'where's wally' costumes (still red and white) when attending matches and then have somebody take pics of the crowd and then we can play a game to see if you can find the 'where's the wenger out wally' would be great fun! ;)

As to pundits, the only decent one who speaks without bias and speaks honestly about every team is GARY NEVILLE!!! Who woulda thought out of all the ex players, rat-boy would be the best pundit!! Fair play G Nev!

jamie rednapp and jamie carragher, their former clubs have alot of problems not like arsenal. so i dont see the reason why they are citising and underrating arsenal yet they have got talent that wenger has developed himself. we are not like man city that bought the whole squard in 2 years... patience pays. this is our year.

Haters......, you make us proud

Quoting Addinho:
With a few exceptions, the professional pundits within English football have consistently proven, beyond all reasonable doubt, that they simply haven't got a clue what they are talking about.

That's why no one in their right mind should take what they say seriously, yet alone actually continue to listen to them or read what they write.

Spot on, they are all full of sh1te.

all pundits whether its BBC or ITV or who ever seem to not like arsenal. is it because we do things the right way? is it because we play the beautiful game as it should? or do they like seeing us fail?. pundits are just mouthpieces that most times get it wrong constantly

TV channels (BBC and ITV are worse than Sky) should stop focusing on getting ex-footballers as pundits. They are on the whole useless, some can't even pronounce most footballers' names. Instead get journalists on, I'd much rather watch them. BT Sport are doing it. Sunday Supplement is a much better show than Match of the Day - just on at an awful time.

Last year Theo scored 21 so it looks a bit like it. I think what stumps football pundits (and others who are hard of thinking) is that they fall into the trap of assuming midfielders are only bit part goal scorers. Barcalona for a long time have made a habit of scoring by the bucket load from midfield. Our midfield is also set up to score plenty which takes the pressure off our strikers.

With regard to our defence, I think Sagna's and Vermaelan's flexibility allow us to keep top players who otherwise be looking elsewhere for playing time if they were kept as 4th CB. No top talent wants to be 4th choice.
