Obviously Mr Wenger did not listen to my advice regarding tactics, and hence Arsenal were defeated by an admittedly strong Sunderland side. This has caused the dissenting voices to grow ever louder, and the calls for Wenger’s head to become more and more numerous.

An interesting news story I found during my normal post-defeat twitter search was one from the Mail on Sunday that claimed Wenger was to be moved upstairs and Pep Guardiola from Barcelona would take over as manager in the summer.

Before I start the rest of this article, I will just point out that the rumour is utter tripe.

There are no sources to confirm even the possibility, and it doesn’t take much to see that Guardiola would have to be mad to swap the Nou Camp for the Emirates.

Nevertheless, here are the potential pros and cons of such a thing happening.

Cons

He may want a team rebuild

If Mr Guardiola were to arrive at Arsenal tomorrow, he would likely decide that a large number of players in the squad will need to go. Removing such a large number of players will demoralise the remainder of the squad, as friendships and partnerships on the pitch will be disrupted. They would have to learn to play with a whole new set of players, which as was proved by Wenger’s late trolley dash this summer, is rather difficult.

He is used to having money

While I’m not suggesting that Arsenal is a poor club, it is rather obvious that the board are not willing to splash the cash for fears that the new players will not deliver. Sometimes this has worked well, with the likes of Robin Van Persie arriving for very little money. However, it has become increasingly obvious that the players at Arsenal are simply not good enough to deal properly with the rigours of top-level football. At Barcelona Guardiola only has to point at a player before 50 million Euros are deposited at their club’s front door. He will not get that here, and would have to learn how to build a team on a tighter budget without falling into the same trap Wenger has.

Immense Pressure

When a manager of this level of success and stature comes to a club, he will be expected to immediately bring the results. If Arsenal aren’t 20 points clear by Christmas, he will immediately be under scrutiny. Even the best managers can’t always deliver immediately on demand. It may take time, but that might not be quick enough for the fans, or the board if they decide to take the plunge.

It’s not all bad though...

Pros

He’s clearly top class

He may have a top-class squad at Barcelona, but it takes a good manager to make the most of good players. He’s a good man-manager and can certainly bring the best out of this Arsenal side now, which could become even better with the possibility of summer additions.

New manager, new direction?

Arsenal’s play has become stagnant recently, with none of the verve and flair of the glory days. If he was hired, it might be sign that the Club want to bring Barcelona’s style of play to the Emirates, whatever it takes. That means big-money signings and a new mentality. A winning mentality, not the well-we-tried-our-best one.

More could come to mind, but the main aim was to temper the wave of excitement and demand that could spread at this rumour. Personally I think that it would be an excellent idea, but we ought to give Wenger another chance. Only one more, mind you. I think I’ll set up a new thing. Every time Arsenal concede a goal, a reserve player dies.
