Footballers come, footballers go, that is the circle of life and the way of the business, everyone has a price and everyone has a shelf-life. But at Arsenal this is becoming a regular and unfortunate occurrence, to lose one captain is shabby, to lose THREE is downright silly.

Robin Van Persie has seemingly become the club’s most infamous hat-trick today with the news he will not extend his contract and seemingly has his bags already packed. Gooners have seen Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas make similar exits in recent summers but despite being used to it by now, it would be fair to say Robin’s possible exit cuts very deep indeed.

Not only is he the captain (Arsenal’s armband seems to make players want to leave rather than stay and fight) but the Flying Dutchman has just completed a quite sensational season. 2011/12 saw him drag Arsenal back from the 8-2 mauling at Old Trafford into a third place finish which many, myself included, thought completely beyond Arsene Wenger’s men come September.

But on July 4, Robin declared a desire for independence, a move which if you believe the media, Arsenal did not know he was about to make. So what is it? A desire to actually leave behind the Emirates in the pursuit of trophies or a clever ruse to get what he wants?

‘An update for the fans’

The fury has been unleashed followed by the most coded statement I have seen from a footballer in a very long time, full of subtle wordplay and contradictions.

I have kept quiet all this time out of respect and loyalty for the club’ – nothing to do with being at Euro 2012 and wanting to concentrate on performing well for Holland then Robin?

‘I personally have had a great season but my goal has been to win trophies with the team and to bring the club back to its glory days’ - I wasn’t aware the club had faded into the Championship ala Leeds United? The glory days have not faded Robin, they are simply just shrouded in a mist which needs a strong wind to clear it. Oh and as for trophies, I seem to remember a tap in against Milan which would have levelled the game at 4-4 and took us into a Champions League quarter final....

Out of my huge respect for Mr. Wenger, the players and the fans I don’t want to go into any details, but unfortunately in this meeting it has AGAIN become clear to me that we in many aspects disagree on the way Arsenal FC should move forward’ – Firstly, how long have you been concerned about the direction of the club? Secondly ‘huge respect’ means you perhaps tell the manager of your decision first and not your personal website.

I’ve thought long and hard about it, but I have decided not to extend my contract. You guys, the fans, have of course the right to disagree with my view and decision and I will always respect your opinions’ – Not enough to hear them plead with you to stay and fight and drag this club to trophies the same way your goals inspired us to wins such as that one at Anfield.

‘I love the club and the fans, no matter what happens’ – I love Arsenal and that’s why I am packing my bags......

As soon as Mr. Gazidis is back from his 2-week holiday in America further meetings will follow and I will update you if and when there are more developments.’ – If you don’t intend to stay, why have more meetings and secondly, Arsenal’s commercial director has confirmed Mr Gazidis is not on holiday, something to tell us Robin?

Lack of ambition?

It’s important to elaborate a little further on that ‘lack of ambition’ – this time last Summer, Arsenal had signed just Carl Jenkinson. This year we have Lukas Podolski (100 appearances for Germany) and Olivier Giroud in the bag. It took Arsene Wenger until deadline day and after an 8-2 mauling by Manchester United to get the bodies we needed in, this year’s shopping has been done far more brisker.

Potentially, Arsenal have what I consider to be one of the best squad’s the club has seen for three or four years this season, solid goalkeeper in Wojciech Szczesny, solid centre-halves in Vermaelen and Koscielny, Arteta, Song and hopefully an eager Jack Wilshere in midfield and three forwards in Van Persie, Podolski and Giroud who bagged almost 100 goals last season.

Not quite Man City squad depth I grant you but better than we have seen at the Emirates for a few years. Unhappy with Arsene bringing kids through Robin? I have news for you, you were purchased as a raw youngster so please do not bite the hand which has fed!

Personal matters

It’s widely known the club stood by Robin when he was falsely accused of a sexual assault in 2005, he was cleared and is just that today, an innocent man. It has been widely reported the whole matter placed great strain on his relationship with his now wife Bouchra. The couple seem happy as ever now which is delightful to see. But consider her words in an interview published by the Sun newspaper among others on May 29 2012.

'Arsenal showed faith in Robin when he was going through a lean time, so we should not repay them by thinking about other clubs.

'Our home life and our children are happy in London’

A sense of perspective on the whole matter?

The future?

There is one with or without Robin, I personally would now rather see him sold than an agonizing year of will he/won’t he. It’s your move Arsene/Ivan but in this elaborate card game I would call his bluff and transfer list him immediately – We either get the cash we can for him or he slinks back into the Emirates with his tail between his legs

I certainly want to see the captain’s armband removed from him and placed around the biceps of someone who loves the club.

Someone who allegedly does not need an agent, someone who will be straining every sinew to get back into the team and make his club proud and thank them for standing by him. Someone called Jack Wilshere.

Too young? Yes definitely but remember what they said about Tony Adams when he was handed the armband? He didn’t exactly turn out too bad did he?

Come on guys, I'm fed up with this talk we can't compete financially, we have two BILLIONAIRES in charge of the club, whose net worth is surely more that Abramovich. The problem is, the one who the board backs (for a reason a can't fathom) is tighter than a ducks backside on dessicants.

It breaks my heart to see Club after Club listed as making big transfers and all we hear is that Arsenal are 'interested' in someone.I agree that as soon as AW shows interest in comes City, United, Chelsea and now Tottenham. With Arsenal policy we don't stand a chance.I wonder if they care as much as they pretend and admit THEY HAVE GOT IT WRONG.

ice, He can't score goals without the Cameroon mid fielder SONG ALEX'that's why he was rubbish in Europe 2012.Give the captainship to veermalen u bloody slack. How long have u been eating free money from Arsenal on the bench in the name of injury.Ungreatful ***.Arsenal is bigger than twart.

Open your eyes!! it is the right time for RVP to make his move. At his age and injury problems this is the best time to make a switch.

AFC wage structure is no ideal and strengthening of the squad is always at the minimal and business-like ( buy cheap and sell high )

The 12/13 season AFC will not be able to play flowing soccer with the current crop of players. Direct soccer !!!

The players will not be so united as most of them will be individuals and glory seekers.

SAD but pay peanuts get monkeys right? Isnt that why good players dont come to AFC?

If he goes , he goes, we have lost people befor, and doubtless we lose more over the coming seasons, Walcott is stalling over a new contract, in my opinion, that would be no loss, never liked him as a player. As for captain i think Vermaelen should get it, he has pledged his career to the Arsenal, when he retires, then Wilshere.
I would love us to win something without RVP next season and him to win nothing, that would be justice for me

RVP has never had back to back 40 games plus seasons and that was when he was younger. History says let him go.

Vermalaen for captain. No doubt.

The winning cards lays in Arsenes hands because if RVP is kept one more season he can't afford not to perform if he wants a mega move to another club

Enough is enough, RVP please leave Arsenal, otherwise you are the one that was making us loose.

If rvp is to go he has to tek alex song along coz half of hs goals we're assisted by him

It is a sad reflection on footballers today that loyalty stands for nothing and I don't care how much they tell the media how Arsene is like a father to them etc,etc their interest is in No.1. So goodbye RVP thanks for the memories - lets make some money from this transfer and do what the great AW does every season - create another world beating star. And as for making young Wiltshire captain - I'm sorry I have to strongly disagree - there is only ONE player who deserves this honour - MR. ALEX SONG!!!

Robin Van Persie surely can go hahahahahaha, Wenger just sell him right away; let him not finish the contract it's not worth. I would rather have a team that has got one spirit. Go Robin Van Persie!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!I watched you at Euro, and watched you so many times me too out of respect I will not disclose your weaknesses hahahahaha

Arsenal will move on with or without RVP!!! rvp is not the only striker in the world .if he don't wants to continue, let him go!

Better the ENEMY that attacks you than the FRIEND that hugs you.

Did RVP talk of money? no. he wants to win trophies which is the dream of every player,if fabregas and nasri didnt leave, would they have won any silverware? certainly not, lets just understand that the arsenal board is made up of greedy and selfish people, they dont want to guarantee the happiness of the fans. this season i wont spend a dime to watch their match until i see changes in the team.

Well i cant blame dis guyz...at least they can see clearly dat d club is just using them to achieve there own personal interest(money).I think the board & AW have to think of the best way to move this club forward and stop making irrelevant signings.what did we actually need a 2 left footer striker for while we already have d best left footed striker in d team? What I was actually expecting is 1 perfect right foot striker to pair up RVP in the front line.itz so sad we have to loose our gr8 players every season and am sure dis won't stop unless d board & AW are ready to repent from this there awkward way of running the club.
+8 #9 Robert Bongomin 2012-07-05 11:06
RVP note that arsenal got you as a raw talent and stood by you during you difficult periods. Have you forgotten that you were injury prone but still the club stood by you. Think twice otherwise Mr. AW please sell RVP outside the premiership to Anzhi FC in Russia
+2 #8 Mlami3 2012-07-05 11:02
Wenger anticipated RVP's departure. That's why he brought in Gervinho, Giroud, Podolski, and Park. If these guys are well supported by Arteta, Wilshere, Rosicky and Song, trust me they'll deliver the goods.
RVP is a traitor just like Mercenary Nasri!

Heartbroken but life goes on. May Arsenal grant him his will. Transfer list him and sell him now and get money to buy other equally good players but with priority a star player replacement and life goes on with or without RVP Arsenal can RISE to the invincibles of 2004. Good luck Gooners!!!!
#6 Anton 2012-07-05 10:38
Lets stop putting the blame on the players. There must be something wrong at the club. We keep loosing players at their prime. Why can't we hang onto them as like for example Man U does???
+4 #5 IndiGooner 2012-07-05 10:20
I am Gutted for AFC that players like him treated club like a whore. I think RvP should be sold ASAP to clubs like PSG or Anzhi like a pig in the market to the highest bidder. Whats more sad is we will loose more players like Theo and Ramsey soon.

Quoting Rob G:
pro, regarding captains, Henry, Fabregas and now RVP manufactured moves, Vieira was to the best of my knowledge actually sold to Juventus by the manager hence why he is not included.

Incorrect he was flirting with other clubs since 2000. He forced a move.
