So Robin Van Persie revealed his true colours as a money-grabbing scallywag with the integrity of a 15th century mercenary. He turned down the chance to become an Arsenal legend (and get a decent pay rise) to go and sit on the bench at either Manchester or Turin and get paid a great deal more (not that it registers when you’re being paid as much as he is).

He cited lack of ambition as a major factor, despite the fact we’d signed two strikers to take the strain off him. There are other signings in the pipeline. There is ambition here. The fact he hasn’t waited to see who we signed shows he made up his mind months ago. When he claimed he was waiting until the end of the season to think about his future we should have realised he was never going to sign, that he was being tapped up by Patrick Viera and the rest to go and play for Manchester City, with all the other mercenary fools.

You could say he ‘deserves’ to win trophies, and won’t get that at Arsenal. He’s only ‘deserved’ to win trophies since he managed to spend a year of the treatment table, where he suspiciously had no issues with the club’s direction (and no interest from City). Comparisons to Matt Le Tissier are a little unfair, because Arsenal do have at least a chance of winning a major trophy every season, they’ve just fallen short. If Van Persie hadn’t been injured in the 2007/8 season, when we came so close, who knows what might have happened when Eduardo was injured and Adebayor’s form suffered?

Arsenal are not denying the chance to for him to win trophies, they’re bringing in players to try and make that a reality. Everyone was fine with Arsenal’s direction this year until he released his statement.

And yet this is the Arsenal board’s fault?!

Arsenal have a policy of only spending within their means, with money they actually have and can replenish themselves. This means that the books are always balanced, and there’s no danger of financial difficulty a la Rangers or Leeds United. The majority shareholder Stan Kroenke, is admittedly very much in this to make money for himself. However, he is allowing Arsenal to stay fiscally balanced, and isn’t interfering. It’s unfortunate that since he joined two captains have left. This is not his fault. These are two players who decided to move to further their own interests without a moment of care for the club that made them great. They didn’t want to stay and there was no point trying to make them.

Robin Van Persie wouldn’t have stayed if we’d signed Eden Hazard and Ezequiel Lavezzi. He wants money. Fine. Trot off and have your money, you tool.

Cesc Fabregas was desperate to return to his hometown club. Signing Juan Mata would not have made this change.

Samir Nasri is a twat. Never mind.

Alisher Usmanov has taken it upon himself to stride in condemning the board’s ‘vision for the club’, suggesting we are only interested in making money, and don’t care about the football. He is claiming that he wants Arsenal to ‘be successful, with a big enough war chest to attract top players and pay them top wages.’ You mean, like, the wage restructuring Arsenal are working on at the moment?

It’s the war chest comment that really rankles here. Next year THREE new sponsorship deals will give Arsenal an 80m cash injection, made purely by themselves (that’s Ivan Gazidis and Stan Kroenke there, kids). This sounds like enough money to buy some players and pay them a smidge more. Because let’s be honest, footballers are only really interested in money these days.

Furthermore, Arsenal are not a team that signs stars and only stars. We sign players who will work as part of our team and do not put themselves above the Club (Hi there, Robin). Splashing out on a team of mercenary prima donnas will make us as bad as City. Arsenal is honestly three signings and some better defensive work away from challenging from the Premier League title. You did see the Man City game, right? I know that’s a common phrase often trotted out, but the appointment of legendary defender Steve Bould gives me some hope for that. And the whole, you know, Podolski, Giroud, possibly Yann M’Vila or that other chap from Toulouse thing. Players that will not cost zillions, and are all proven internationals and in some cases winners?

Where were Red and White Holding’s comments when we qualified for the Champions League yet again, despite being written off? And when we signed Lukas Podolski, who chose us over mega-money from Russia? Nowhere, because his statement was only released to capitalise on the bad news that our beloved captain is evil (and don’t ever think it was a coincidence), to incite division in the Arsenal board and fans, and to make himself look like a loving and benevolent person.

He isn’t.

https://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/nov/19/football.russia

That article is a good start, and do some more digging and you’ll find yet more dirt.

He is only interested in making money from the Club, but unlike Kroenke, if he loses interest he would financially ruin us, wanting as he does to purchase players from his own pocket. He could sign a sponsorship deal to give us a cash boost, but he won’t. He is instead trying to take full control of Arsenal for his own gains, regardless of what it’s doing to the team.

Arsenal can very easily do even better without RVP, he’s one player. He scores because others make him chances. But Alisher Usmanov is playing on our frustrations to put himself in power, put money in his own pocket, and turn Arsenal into the very evil we’ve been fighting against since Roman Abramovich turned his oil-stained head towards Stamford Bridge.

There is no defence of these tight fisted bast***s they are interested in one thing .......making money, lets be honest they will keep the club ticking along to drain it of as much money as they can, the Yank doesn't give a toss as long as he is making money. The thing I find most annoying the the way Wenger treats the fans as if we are imbeciles, all this bullsh1t about players coming back from injury as NEW signings and the same old fanny about only needing SPECIAL player. WEll Mr Wenger you can't buy SPECIAL players for peanuts. IT is sad that we have become a selling club we seem to have lost our way, as long as the moneymakers of this club ie the yank and the board continue to milk our club we will never be able to compete at the top level.

today, 1 sept,2012. Where is the ambition of the club. How many left and how many are in, and of wat quaility. The board should be retrenched, arsene given a swift chase and players bought. Can you buy a player to pay them minute salaries? No, you cant

Good article. Diaby announced today he wants to repay the manager's faith in him. I just don't know who to ***ing trust any more. But the board and manager are doing what they should be at the moment, the signs were all brilliant until RVP turned ***.

@ AGG4L Totally agree with absolutely everything you said. We're on track, improving our transfer policy, learning from our mistakes in this revolutionary, ballsy project, and this 10 year project (starting with the stadium funding and ending with no debt, global sponsorship megadeals and a stadium that prints money) is designed to put us at the very top of the table. That is ambition of the highest order.

Quoting Jack:
Why is everyone convinced the board are lining their pockets? Half of them don't own any shares, so have no input, and if they took money from profits then they'd be found out. The Club barely breaks even, that's the honest truth. It might be easier to villainise the board and pretend they're all corrupt gangsters stealing money from the transfer budget but that's so false. Maybe if the players pulled their fingers out and won something Arsenal would make a profit.

er think you will find that is NOT true... the figures dont lie and if u can b bothered to get ur head out the sand and look it up... the club makes HUGE profits... you aint got a scooby bro... Wenger n the board made a mockery of the AGM, wenger sat in silence... utter joke... its arsenal plc laughin all the way to the bank.... sold lies and ppl still believe the spin... SAD truly sad...

Pay Van Persie, the 29 year old injury prone player who had one great season, a massive amount? If he gets injured everyone would moan that we were paying him a silly amount.
#20 Jeff Smith 2012-07-22 13:34
The board are stuck in the middle ages. Football has changed and its the players that call the shots.
Wenger signed too many underperforming players. Get rid of some of them and pay RVP the market rate his goals deserve.
+2 #19 egerton 2012-07-16 16:00
ithink rvp is being ungrateful. as injury plagued as he has ever been in arsenal, he is kept. he needs money, nd arsenal needs future. let him go and be replaced immedtly with 2df, a striker. just that we will win the league and cups next season.

Great article I agree with you on Usmanov keep him out. The business model chosen by the board in 2006 was always going to take time, it was a 10 year plan. We've come close to silverware over the last 7 years, we've been in the Champions League every year even though the media and the experts have expected us to finish 6 or 7 in the league. We were in the Champions League Final in 2006, 8 March '08 we were top of the EPL and through to the quarter finals of the UEFA CL after beating AC Milan at the San Siro(1st English team to do so), made it to the 2009 UEFA CL Semi Final, 2010 we beat Barcelona in the 1st Leg and got a dubious red card in 2nd Leg there's bit more but all this was achieved on ***ty budget and wage structure plus the injuries to our players. Wenger is doing a F**KING great job. The business plan is starting bear fruit just signed Podolski & Giroud. Gervinho,Per,Santos and Chambo in their 2nd season should improve, Jack & Diaby back. All we need is a DM and GK.

Gazidas , kronke + hill-wood need to be shown the door . None of them give a rats ass bout arsenal . From invincibles to scrapein a top 4 spot at best is unacceptable for a club such as Arsenal fc . Thers no use havin a great stadium and watching teams like stoke + Wigan givin us a spanking . Get our great club back to actually competing for the epl and I'll be happy - even if we dnt win it - AT LEAST HAVE A GO AT IT . Fed up reading negative comments about rvp . The guy dragged us into 3rd this year and was a great captain . If he wasn't a winner we'd have been mid table at best - winners dnt stay at selling clubs - which is what we have become unfortunately

It's quite upsetting the way that Usmanov has managed to twist what seems to be most of the visitors to the site with his opportunistic statement. It's true, where was he when things went right?
-1 #15 Sunday 2012-07-10 10:55
Let RVP go. Wish him good luck. I predict we will win something this season. Last season we played 4-5 games without natural left and right backs but managed to finish third. Who knows what could have happened if we didnot have these injuries. Wenger should just add one defensive midfielder and we are home and dry. RVP is human. He missed a number of gilt edged chances that could have changed Arsenal's fortunes. The AC milan one is a good example.

Is not all about trofy. I know what he need's, ego, owo, kwudi, money, rvp money is not every thin. but remainber dat u an injury player, go we can do without U. Afterall many beta dan u have all left an we are still moving higher.

And in honesty, don't lie to yourselves. Arsenal can't do better without RVP considering the current squad of substandard players. Many of our players wouldn't get a starting spot in many top teams. Forget about Barca, RMadrid, BMunich, ManU and sadly Chelsea. Ramsey, Djourou, Gibbs, Diaby, Gervinho, Walcott and the likes won't start at the likes of Juventus. It is the hard and sad truth. We've sat at this same spot battling for 3rd and 4th place while Chelsea have just won the UEFA CL. Who is Chelsea? Since when did they become Europe's best? Who's their legend? Drogba? Lampard? or Zola? Compared to the likes of Henry, Bergkamp, Pires, Adams, Vieira and some of the best ever. The club is in retrogression and the earlier we admit that the better it will be for our beloved club
+3 #11 JahKid 2012-07-09 10:40
Personally, if I was in RVP's shoes I would still decide against a contract extension because I would want to see what the club does in the transfer market and the final yr of my contract. If there's ambition and we win things, fine. If not, then they have no case against me leaving for free. The board is only concerned with balancing the books and lining their pockets. Wenger is among the top 3 paid managers so why should he complain? The fans however get taunted by their rivals about the lack of trophies. The Arsenal hierarchy doesn't seem to care about this
-2 #10 Robert Gondwe 2012-07-09 10:26
I already said RVP can go and Arsenal can do even better without him, with the departure of Cesc and Nasri we still managed top four, did we make a major signing to replace them to achieve that? What more with now that we got notable signings. RVP GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOO!
-2 #9 tobias 2012-07-08 18:01
after all we've done for rvp he's such a dick leaving
-3 #8 Barnaby 2012-07-08 18:01
Another thing about RVP is that he was part of the team that sodn't win anything for seven years. So he's essentially complaining about himself. You cannot say this about the board, there is no evidence to support it, it's purely based on conjecture and reactionary anger. In what world is self sufficiency criticised? Nowhere, that's where, except in this bizarre world of football where people will take anything for a fleeting year of glory.
+2 #7 Bertram Nigeria 2012-07-08 17:12
The board and the the manager have taken the fans for granted for too long for their selfish interest. If arsenal were to be a club is some other clime, i don't think that with the anger of most fans most of them will walk freely on streets. Every year what we hear from the manager is one excuse or the other. You don't win silverware with average players.Secondly you don't sell you best player to you major rival just because you need their huge fund. while they grow stronger you are getting weaker. Every player needs Money, Fame and Medal. For the past seven year my beloved Arsenal cannot guarantee this if we have to tell ourselves the truth, how many Arsenal players are nominated in world best 11 year in year out. This is my opinion and it is without bias. Take back this team to where it belongs now. Enough of excuses.
+4 #6 Bertram Nigeria 2012-07-08 17:10
You are not fair enough to both RVP and some of the players that left Arsenal. I am an Arsenal fan and will remain a true fan for life. The truth is that both the board and the manager have never shown interest in winning trophy. They are only interested in balancing the account of the club. Must the account of the club balance every year. For goodness sake let the account go red this year and give us trophy.
-2 #5 uzo onubogu 2012-07-08 10:56
Van persie after all arsenal did for u and after what u did for arsenal your statement (unambitious) is not good at all please try and find a way. To clean that comment. That you are leaving arsenal do not give you the bad mind to spoil or tanish your image with millions of fans you've gathered through arsenal. Everything is not money
#4 The God 2012-07-08 09:05
What is wrong wit you ... this days it is imposible compete for 1st place in BPL unless you have financial help(in our case it could be Usmanov). They call us(Arsenal) a yoke !!
And by the way Tottenham will have new owners wich have billones like ManCity
-5 #3 Andrés 2012-07-07 22:12
You've just written everything I was feeling. I'm so disappointed on van Persie. Hope he goes and doesn't work out in any of all those money-loaded teams he wants so vigorously to join and then no one will want him so he'll end up with nothing. That's what he deserves. NOTHING.
#2 Barnaby 2012-07-07 19:40
If they used it to line pockets people would see due to public funds, and there would be uproar.
+3 #1 Dave 2012-07-07 19:33
What a load of ***e ushamov in arsenal better things, yes 90 mil sponsor to line there pockets simples we want to win the lge fck ya 3rd deal with it big club needs to win things
