Robin Van Persie’s summer battle with Arsenal over whether he stays or goes can’t have come as a surprise for many Arsenal fans after witnessing the same thing happen with Cesc and Nasri.  What is more interesting is the growing likelihood of Theo Walcott entering a similar situation.

There are obvious similarities between the circumstances of Robin and Theo, yet despite this, Arsenal fans haven’t reacted in the same way.  However, after reviewing the facts, I can’t help but think to myself ‘why not?’

Frustrating Theo

It is certainly true that Theo has been nowhere near the player Robin has for the club.  It is also true that Theo is not treated with the same unanimous adoration as the Dutch maestro.  In fact when I heard about the proposed £15 million move to Liverpool my initial thoughts were that we should cash in on a player that has been a long-term frustration of mine.

Thoughts of Ljungberg and Pires flew round my head; Theo isn’t a patch on the Arsenal wingers of my youth.  While this comparison might be correct, it is also unfair.  I turned instead to the realistic alternatives to Walcott: Victor Moses, Junior Hoilett, Charles N’Zogbia.  Suddenly Walcott begins to look like a must keep.

A change in standards

At first I thought this second batch of comparisons appeared to be a patch below the Arsenal standard, but then I pondered, what is the Arsenal standard nowadays?  Who are our ‘star players’?  Sagna, Vermaelen and Arteta spring to mind immediately, but isn’t Walcott a player of similar ability?  I think so and I think that while we still have players such as Chamakh, Park and Squillaci at the club we shouldn’t be thinking of selling Walcott standard players.

Powerless to stop him?

Despite my newfound faith in Theo, two things still make me think that the transfer could still go ahead.  Firstly Walcott is NOT Robin Van Persie, therefore a wage rise from 65k tom 100k seems audacious.  My second and most dramatic point comes in the form of an 18 year old wonder kid from the south coast…

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has a very similar story to Theo Walcott but seems to be the 1st choice of the two in the England squad despite being 5 years his junior.  One thing I took back from the Euro’s was that surely Alex will get MUCH more playing time next season, and Walcott is the only player who will realistically be replaced.  I certainly can’t imagine Theo sitting on the bench week in week out.

You’ll never Walcott alone

So I sat down to write this blog with my ‘Walcott out’ hat on, but after much deliberation I’m just not sure we’re in a position to sell him.  Brendan Rogers on the other hand has been making loud noises about the Liverpool type of player and the qualities they possess.  Some of these qualities do make you think of the Arsenal number 14.  A few examples, ‘Someone who can ‘add value for many years’?  Walcott’s only 23.   Players who have the required ‘capacities and capabilities’, Walcott’s certainly showed this at times.  Rogers also comments that he would like his players to be role models, a quality that I would one hundred percent ascribe to Theo as he is rarely making negative headlines.

Despite this apparently masked attempt to perhaps big up Theo before signing him, a couple of qualities mentioned by Theo do seem at odds with an Arsenal fans perception of Theo.  He firmly believes players must have the highest technical and tactical qualities and must be focused under pressure.  Perhaps the best thing to do to dissuade Rogers would be to send him a montage of Theo’s famous cross come shot.

If I were to stick my neck on the line I would say that if Theo moves it will be to Liverpool but I think Arsenal will offer Theo an improved contract before too long.

They should sell the ungrateful gimp, he ain't worth 50 k a week let alone a 100K, with OX starting to make a claim for a starting point Walnut will spend more time on the bench methinks, if he goes its no great loss.

i gotta agree with n1 gooner ....even though i support man utd i like arsenal becuz of the style of football they play....i also think theo walcott is under-rated becuz he isnt as consistent as arsenal fans would like but i think he will realise his full potential when he starts playing as a centre forward indeed let him play centre formard with carzola providing the passes he has n theo has very good finishing the we will realise he is actually as good as everyone expected after what i see in the euro championship i know he has the potential its just for him to be treated by the club and fans as vital as other member becuz he has helped the club out of many bad situations......on his dat i rate his as 1 of the best wingers in the world .......this will be his season

Have you all forgotten that barca game when arsenal were two goals down and theo came in and changed the complexion of the game? 14 assists,8 goals, these are stats which can be matched to any top winger around the planet. Even di-maria wasnt that impressive in the mickey mouse league. The point is,Theo is the man we need. he is not what we want we NEED him. With him around,OX can be eased into the first eleven and both can be kept relatively fresh by rotating the squad. I love theo and i think every arsenal fan should. He is one of those kids who had all the country after him and he signed for arsenal at that time. he is the youngest player EVER who was for a world cup squad. he destroys teams with his pace. I would have him in my team any day of the week

Van Persie needs a retroactive pay from arsenal. He probably felt he was underpaid the last couple of years.Everyone who has left is getting a bigger pay than him and at 28 he has to do some recouping. I figured all along it had to be money and not silverware. What can be the greatest motivator for a man that age but money?

Well said. Maybe keep him as an impact player only if he extends his contract another 3 years. I believe the boy can still add value.

we do this at Arsenal don't we? Sell Theo, we got Ox, sell Fabregas we got Nasri and Wilshere, Sell Nasri, we got Ramsey and Wilshere, Sell Adebayor we got Van Persie, gradually you erode the team and it's quality, and who's to say at this current rate Ox plays a blinder over the next two years and the other clubs come sniffing offering big wages..what? Sell Ox we got Akpom, Afobe? Walcott frustrating yes, but also got assists and goals last year, so essentially we're selling the two players who got the bulk of our goals? Don't flipping sell him, time to keep our players and build, not keep destroying, or are we gooners just essentially a bunch of surrender monkeys whom accept being a feeder club. Show some pride!

Nice analysis. Theo might not be a match winner, but he certainly a player should not lose to any fellow EPL team. He is quality though, he s not always consistent

Nice one Tom!

All valid points. As a fan, I'm still hoping that Theo will start hitting the gear. I hope he stays. Just I don't think he is worth 100k a week and I think that he thinks he is worth every penny and then some...

I've been saying for along time that theo is very unrated by people in football.Give this kid a couple more years and you will see how dynamic he is.

Ox will be playing central midfield I believe anyway.
