Because us Gooners have been far too happy of late, what with the whole winning-games-and-looking-quite-solid thing, whatever cruel fates that govern us have brought us an interview with Bacary Sagna.

In it he states that he has “become used” to players moving on, and feels jealous of Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy, who left Arsenal for Manchester City and won the Premier League. When asked about Arsenal’s departures he admitted that he was somewhat frustrated in the way that players were sold without explanation, though this could be a personal thing, as he was out injured while the Alex Song saga unfolded.

The thing that worried Gooners the most was when asked about whether he would consider leaving Arsenal,he said “I want to get back playing first, then we will see”. He also said nobody had approached him for a contract extension.

Words can be deceiving

On paper, fairly stark. And it made prime twisting material for the media.

“Sagna slams Arsenal transfer policy”

“Sagna frustrated at Arsenal”

“Sagna unhappy at Arsenal”

And in all honesty, it is quite worrying that a senior and crucial member of the team feels that way. His feelings are justified, that’s what a lot of fans have thought recently.

But is that as far as it goes?

All he’s said is that it’s annoying that he doesn’t know more about player departures. Fair enough. That suggests there isn’t great communication at Arsenal, which is easily fixed. He’s not said he wants to leave, or is unhappy playing at Arsenal. If I was a newspaper, I’d say he was frustrated “with”, not “at” Arsenal. He’s frustrated with the way Arsenal do things, not the fact he has to play for them.

Another contract saga?

And there were his comments about his contract.

Sagna’s current contract runs to 2014, and nobody has approached him regarding an extension. This is true. But Arsenal are about to approach him, so his comments are either an attempt to get them to better their offer, or he genuinely doesn’t know about their intentions.

This may surprise you, but Arsenal aren’t the only team who have contract issues. Look at Chelsea for example.

Frank Lampard has a year left. John Terry has two. Ashley Cole is in the last year of his contract now. It’s not that uncommon. Our contract dealings are brought sharply into focus because of departures, not because the way Arsenal do contracts is bad. We could act faster in some cases, but we’ve tied down Vermaelen and Koscielny on long-term contracts, as well as players like Diaby. The only “bad” contracts are the players who refuse them.

In all honesty, Bacary Sagna is irritated that Arsenal sell players. Fair enough. We all are. He’s not been approached about a new contract yet. Maybe this annoys him. He will be approached soon, and once he’s playing he’ll probably feel a lot more in the loop about things. It’s worrying he feels this way, and it’s not great that he’s come out with it in public, in fact it’s pretty poor form.

But we don’t have to love every player who plays for us. It’s not kissing the badge or leaving, there are in-betweens. And in all honesty, all it would take to calm Bacary down is to win something. Maybe the players could show their own ambition, eh?

There is nothing wrong with a player being as frustrated and speaking out as any fan would. Sagna already showed his passion and love for Arsenal particularly against the Spuds in the 5-2 win. Has he said anything wrong? No....has he a right to vent his frustration in public?...maybe. He has been a good servant and I for one feels he should be offered a new contract..Will he be first choice?...I'm not so sure...and that might be where the problem lies. Whatever happens..I am sure the decision will be made for the good of the team...even though some might doubt this...AW knows you know!

For years everyone at arsenal has been talking about the future, it’s time to deliver, we have a solid squad now, it’s time to focus on keeping every valuable member and looking to bolster as and when necessary from here on! but this philosophy at arsenal of just rolling over and letting our 1st team key players walk when they or another rival wants them to has to stop! We need to grow a backbone in that respect
