What makes Theo Walcott so valuable to Arsenal? He’s not the finished product, but he has good value on the transfer block and lots of people want him.
It’s perplexing that a player who, up until last year, seemed like he was destined to be a “Super Sub.” Now Theo is one of the first names on the match sheet.
Theo, we all know, is blessed with pace. His dribbling was always suspect and at times his crossing was non-existent. Around the time of Chelsea away last season you really felt as if things had changed for the better. Walcott was no longer sending in floaters, but crossing with pace on the floor and with flat crosses full of pace in the air.
What makes Walcott so valuable is how difficult he is to replace, especially in January. There is only one popular transfer prospect who is not European cup-tied, Zaha.
Let’s take the Wenger view and analyze the economics of a deal. Signing Walcott is going to cost about £90k+/week (Wenger originally went for £75k/week), this means that Wenger has to find a player with his pace and a combination of the other attributes, transfer him in for not much more than the signing-on fee Walcott will get and for less salary per season. I wish you good luck.
In the end, what is best for the club is also best for the player. We are finally in a position where we have a good product who does not have dramatically better financial prospects elsewhere, and who wants to continue to play for the club.
C’mon Theo, #SignDaTing
