Luis Suarez
Arsenal’s hopes of landing Luis Suarez may have taken a hit, but Arsene Wenger is still confident of signing the 26 year old. Speaking in a new conference this morning, although stating that he didn’t want to directly speak about the Liverpool man, he still said the following:
"I don't want to speak about Suarez, because that is between Liverpool and Arsenal. We will completely respect what Liverpool wants to do. We want to (sign the player) if it is feasible in an amicable way," he said.
"I am a great believer you have to keep as much confidentiality as possible, which is quite difficult in the modern world.
"But we work very hard, not only on the case you name, but on other different cases."
These comments suggest that Arsenal are still openly pursuing Suarez and are trying hard to finalise a deal. However the fee will still prove to be a large stumbling block and whether Arsenal will pay Liverpool’s £55 million asking price remains to be seen.
Arsene Wenger also had a few words about the players conduct.
"We have values that we want our players to respect. No matter where they come from, we will be very touchy on that of course.”
He also spoke about the values and the traditions of the club, and any player who joins must uphold these to the highest extent.
Ian Wright
The Luis Suarez saga has attracted many interested parties and today Ian Wright gave his view on the matter.
'I'd welcome him at Arsenal with open arms,' Wright told BBC Sport. 'But if I was Suarez, when you look at everything, it does seem strange he would want to go to Arsenal. I would give Liverpool another season.
Wright also went on to explain that although he is a world class player, there were very few players at Arsenal who would be attracting Suarez to the club and making him think ‘I want to play with them’.
Finally Wright believes that although Suarez would be quality signing, there are other areas where Arsenal need to strengthen on top of the Liverpool forward.
'It doesn't make sense buying Suarez for that money and not backing it up with other signings of the same stature.'
It is hard not to agree with Ian Wright, other players are as important as a new forward. A centre back, holding midfielder and a striker should all be priorities this summer, and with a month to go in the transfer market, Arsene needs to act quickly or face the wrath of the fans.
Vermaelen and Monreal injury update
As well as speaking about our transfer plans this summer Arsene also spoke about the fitness of two of our defenders. Thomas Vermaelen is out for a further 6 weeks with a lower back injury, whilst Nacho Monreal will start training again on Monday following his absence.
