Luis Suarez’ comments on Wednesday have understandably infuriated Brendan Rodgers. Describing his comments as ‘a total disrespect of the club’, Suarez has been made to train in isolation.
Rodgers has not been angered by the personal attack in which the Uruguayan claimed the Reds boss had lied and broken promises, but more because of the disrespect to his team mates, manager and more importantly the club.
“There has been total disrespect of the club - this is a lack of respect of a club that has given him everything. Absolutely everything, we have a standard at Liverpool and I will fight for my life to retain it. The Liverpool Way is all about being committed to the cause and fighting for the shirt. It’s also about dignity and being dignified in how you speak about the club. And it’s about unity,” stated Rodgers.
“If anyone steps outside of those values then I have to deal with it.”
Not For Sale
This latest statement from Rodgers has further outlined that the forward is not for sale. Owner John Henry echoed the same thoughts.
However the problem Liverpool now face is whether to hold out for a £50m asking price for a player who has now undeniably burnt all bridges within the club, or accept Arsenal’s offer and quickly get rid of an influence which has totally marred Liverpool’s pre-season plans.
The Liverpool players and coaches are starting to get fed up with Suarez’ behaviour, rubbing further salt in to the wound by failing to attend Steven Gerrard’s testimonial dinner. His stand is now is now very public and Liverpool have a big decision to make.
“The reality is we don’t want to sell Luis Suarez, it’s as simple as that. He is important for what we are trying to do. There have been a couple of offers but no promises broken - that’s the reality. I don’t believe there is a clause in his contract that says he can leave for any sort of price.”
“What we are trying to do now is get the correct value for a player, but we know we don’t have to sell him.”
What now?
That last comment from Rodgers indicates that if Arsenal can produce the £50m, then Suarez is ours.
However, one can understand Arsene Wenger’s position of not wanting to pay the asking price of a player who clearly has no future at the club.
Liverpool should swallow their pride, get rid of a disruptive influence and start their season in the most positive of lights, rather than having a big ego tarnish the name of such a famous football club.
