It isn’t just us fans that are begging Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal board to ‘spend some f*cking money’, the current players have been as well. And like us they’ve been making hints all summer.
It was made public that the North London club had a large sum of money to spend and now Olivier Giroud has come out and spoke about our need to strengthen.
He said: “In my opinion, it’s necessary for the club to recruit another striker. Obviously I think about it a little bit. It may change the play one day, especially if it’s a high profile signing.
“It’s useless lamenting this though. I know what I have to do and what I’m capable of. I’m focusing on me and my work. The coach is counting on me, so I don’t think too much.”
Arteta’s plea
Before Giroud, we had Mikel Arteta talking about how Arsenal will spend this summer and the excitement building around the club.
The Spaniard spoke about how it was different this summer and how it is great for us to be competing in the transfer market but it hasn’t helped.
Arteta said: “The club have said they are going to be very ambitious in the market and have got the financial resources to get big players,
“I think it’s about time. When you compare us to the other top English clubs and the money they have paid, we are very far apart.
“They made it public that they are going to go big and the sort of players they have been linked with makes me happy.
“I believe we can be contenders again but it also creates a genuine atmosphere for the fans and they need that because we haven’t won trophies in the last years.
“They need something back. I believe in what we have but if we can strengthen a bit, then we are going to make the gap with the other teams much closer.
“I was disappointed when Robin left.
“There’s a difference [in spirit] when you are trying to sell players and when you are trying to buy.”
Wilshere’s turn
Jack Wilshere has highlighted how this year was a huge opportunity for Arsenal, with so many changes involving clubs in and around the top four.
The England midfielder mentioned how if Arsenal can sign more players than it can still be a good season.
He added: “Everyone at the training ground has been talking about big-name signings.
“It would give us all such a massive lift. Not just the players but the staff and everybody connected to Arsenal.
“Everything has changed at the other top-four clubs. Alex Ferguson has gone, Chelsea and City have new managers so we have to set our targets high.
“Manchester United won the title last season yet it wasn’t the best United team we’ve seen. They won it because they had a big squad.
“If you look at their games, they sometimes rotated the whole back four.
“We’ve got a strong team at Arsenal and if we can add a few more to our squad then it can be a good season for us.”
French duo also voice concerns
Our French defenders Laurent Koscielny and Bacary Sagna have added to the support for Arsenal to show ambition in this transfer window.
Firstly our centre-back Koscielny spoke about the physical strain a campaign pushing for Champions League qualification has on you.
He wants the club to be winning trophies, he added: “I want to lift trophies and to have a winning record. I hope the club will give me the means.
“If this weren’t the case, I’d look elsewhere. I want to win titles and I hope the club have the means.
“I feel good at Arsenal and if the club [can] compete with the best, I have no reason to leave.
“But if it fights every year for Champions League qualification it’s hard psychologically to be under such constant pressure.”
‘New signings key’
Sagna added to the growing feeling amongst fans that if we do sign some high quality players then we can challenge for the title.
“We beat great teams last year, we managed to be one of the best teams in the second half of the season.
“If we can be consistent for the whole season, I believe we can be successful.
“I believe that we can challenge for the title with a couple of good signings.”
The problem is we haven’t got these signings. The players want you to make new signings, the fans want you to make new signings so when are you going to Arsenal!
