“Spend! Spend! Spend!” The chants at the Emirates in Saturday were unmistakable, the Arsenal fans’ patience had finally ran out and Arsene Wenger felt the bulk of their anger. The lack of reinvestment in players has infuriated the fans since the start of the summer transfer window, with deals for big name starts being squandered almost every week.
However after the frosty atmosphere of Saturdays game, Wenger and the Board would be stupid not to take the fan’s advice. Players nee d to be brought in and it looks as if the Frenchman may be finally getting the message.
Toby Alderweireld
Firstly, rumours are circulating that a bid for Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld may be being prepared. The Belgium international could cost as little as £6million and is seemingly perfect to solve the defensive problem.
He can operate from centre-back or left-back, meaning some pressure would be relieved from injury prone Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs, as well as centre-backs Vermaelen, Mertesacker and Koscielny.
At a price of just £6million the deal seems too good to be true. Spartak Moscow are frontrunners in the race for Alderweireld, but Spurs are also up there due to their Ajax connections through Jan Vertonghen and Belgian contingency thanks to Dembele, Chadli and Vertonghen again. However Arsenal’s attractive Champions League prospect and available first team place could sway the 24-year-old.
Erik Lamela
Another Spurs target that the Gunners are looking to swoop for is Roma’s starlet Erik Lamela. The player’s father and agent were in the country yesterday to try and agree a move to White Hart Lane however Arsenal could yet again use their more attractive preposition of Champions League football and aesthetically pleasing football to turn the youngster’s head.
At a price of around £32million, the deal would be the marquee signing that Wenger so badly needs.
Although Spurs’ Roma links through Franco Baldini could be the key to the deal, the smaller North London side could miss out on the 21-year-old as they concentrate on signing Russian League flop Willian.
…Iker Casillas?
After Arsenal’s bid for Valencia ‘keeper Vicente Guaita failed categorically earlier on in the week, it has been sensationally claimed that the Gunners could return to La Liga for unsettled Real Madrid man Iker Casillas.
Casillas is renowned for being one of the world’s best goalkeepers, commanding the number 1 spot at Madrid for years on end. However after last season’s clash with Jose Mourinho, he has been left on the bench numerous times which has seen rumours of a move emerging.
The likelihood of Casillas coming to Arsenal is tiny, and most Arsenal fans who see the story will more often than not dismiss the rumour as media rubbish.
The report was sourced from a Spanish newspaper, giving hope to Arsenal hopefuls. However after further research, it becomes clear that the original source is SportsDirect.com. Say no more.
Arsenal will continue to be linked with every player in the world with a left foot and a right foot. However until a signing is made, Wenger’s resolve will continue to be tested.
