As Gareth Bale looks to complete his £85million move from London to Madrid, the player who is under the direct threat of losing his position in the Madrid team could move the other way.
Argentine winger Angel di Maria has been subject to a €30million bid from Arsenal, in an attempt to steal him from the Galacticos where he will more than likely warm the bench.
Bench warmer
As the La Liga side look to be splashing out a world record deal on the Welsh Spurs winger, there can be no way that the 25-year old who joined Madrid from Benfica in 2010 expects to make the first team ahead of him.
And with Cristiano Ronaldo on the other wing, and young sensation Jese Rodriguez developing fast, it would be understandable for di Maria to want out.
Apparent bids were made for di Maria and French teammate Karim Benzema after Arsenal’s 3-0 win in Istanbul against Fenerbahce, however since then Benzema’s agent has ruled out any move away from the Bernabeu.
The Benzema deal is different, with the transfers of Gonzalo Higuain and Jose Callejon to Napoli freeing up yet more space for the Frenchman as he becomes the club’s only recognised centre-forward.
Fit right in
However with the influx of wide talent coming into the Spanish side, di Maria could go looking for a new club of a similar calibre, and with the midfield that Arsenal are boasting at the moment nobody can argue that they are up there with the best.
Di Maria has managed 138 Real Madrid appearances, scoring 25 goals and setting up 53. Alongside Santi, Walcott, Arteta, Rosicky and Podolski, the team can challenge in all competitions.
The fee would be likely to rise over the €30million mark, as Madrid look to recoup the money spent on Bale. With the sales of Higuain, Callejon, Albiol and Pedro Leon making up around £56million, it would take only the sale of di Maria to make the fee back up.
After Saturday's 3-1 win at Fulham, Arsene Wenger said:
"They [current squad members] are special and if I want to add something it has to be special."
