Iker Casillas has been given two definitive options while deciding his future in football.
He either has the option to leave now; according to reports in Spain, Real Madrid received enquiries from Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, or stay the whole season and risk losing his place in the Galacticos side and the Spanish national team.
Go?
Casillas has been left on the bench by new boss Carlo Ancelotti in the first two La Liga games, preferring Diego Lopez who was initially brought in as cover for the 32-year-old when he broke his wrist last year.
He had a rocky relationship with former manager Jose Mourinho, now in charge at Chelsea, which saw him often left on the bench then too.
In a year which is the most important to those vying for World Cup squad places, Casillas needs to be playing regular first team football at a high level in order to compete with a long list of Spanish goalkeepers including the likes of Napoli’s Pepe Reina, Barcelona’s Victor Valdes and Manchester United’s David de Gea.
Stay?
Casillas has a contract until 2017 which includes a €150million buyout clause.
He cannot leave in January as he and Spanish reporter Sara Carbonero are expecting a baby in December 2013, meaning it’s now or never for Spain’s record maker.
Arsenal are desperate to replace the unreliable Wojciech Szczęsny, and since bids for Julio Cesar and Vicente Guaita have so far failed, signing one of the world’s best ever goalkeepers is a good bet.
However Casillas has remained ever loyal to Madrid and he is more than likely to stay put in Madrid in an attempt to win back his first team pace despite no doubt hefty contract offers will be tabled.
