Arsenal have enquired about the availability of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

After Manchester United failed in their bid for the German international earlier in the summer, Arsenal look hopeful after tabling £20million for the 2012 Champions League runner-up.

Gundogan would provide depth to a midfield struggling with injuries, as well as fulfilling the fans wanting for reinvestment in the summer window. Able to play any role in centre midfield, Gundogan is well known for his creativity as well as being able to tackle and be a physical presence.

After Dortmund lost their playmakers in two successive seasons, Shinji Kagawa to Man United last summer and Mario Goetze to Bayern this summer, Gundogan could want out too as Jurgen Klopp struggles to keep hold of his spellbinding 2012 squad.

He spent most of this summer trying to hold onto Robert Lewandowski as Bayern circled the Polish international relentlessly, while looking to spend the fee brought in from Goetze’s sale.

Gundogan is yet to comment on a possible move, but the 22-year-old is certainly one of the world’s best up-and-coming stars. An unsung hero of the Champions League run which saw them beat Madrid on the way to Wembley, Gundogan is likely to cost more than the £20million.

However the deal could go through if Wenger and the Board push for the German to come to the Premier League.
