Arsenal are interested in bringing German wonderkid Julian Draxler to the Emirates, as pressure mounts on Arsene Wenger to spend some of the cash in reserve.
That is the view of John Cross of the Daily Mirror, he adds that although Wenger isn’t totally convinced, the Arsenal board are forcing him to accept that it is worth bidding £40 million for the Schalke midfielder.
Champions League qualification
It has been suggested in many quarters that players were waiting to see if Arsenal would qualify for the Champions League before committing to signing for the club, was Draxler one of those players?
His current club Schalke were also in the final qualifying round and they beat Greece side PAOK to secure a place in the Champions League group stages.
Maybe Draxler was waiting to see if Arsenal qualified and then it would be worth moving to London.
That might suggest why they have waited until the last moment to make a move for the 19-year-old, with interest reportedly dating back to last season.
It was Arsenal and other clubs interest that resulted in Draxler signing a new two-year contract to fend off interest.
£40 million but no £1
It has to be questioned why they consider bidding £40 million for Draxler, an outstanding talent but still only young and not bid an extra £10 million on top of that for Luis Suarez.
Suarez is the key world class star Arsenal crave, yet a combination of the board and Wenger refused to pay the required sum.
Sleepless nights for Draxler
In addition to that, it seems unlikely that Draxler will move now anyway, as well as signing a new contract that could keep him at Schalke until 2018, he has said on record that he would like to stay at the Bundesliga club.
This was after interest from Manchester City and Real Madrid earlier in the summer.
He added: “I had sleepless nights about it.
“It was not an easy decision. You never know whether you will ever get such an offer again.
“In the end, I followed my heart and decided to remain at Schalke.”
It would appear unlikely that he has had his mind changed in a couple of weeks.
The same article mentions that Draxler has a £39.3 million buyout clause but this has reportedly expired and Schalke are now demanding £60 million.
Keep the faith
Although it seems unlikely that Draxler will join the Gunners it can’t be ruled out just yet.
And if Arsenal were to sign the German international for whatever the fee, they would be getting an outstanding talent and player.
If we could sign Draxler we would be getting the next German superstar, let’s hope that all instinct goes out the window and we somehow manage to bring him in because he would be sensational.
