Manchester United spent the majority of their summer transfer window chasing after Cesc Fabregas – a player that they were never going to sign – while Arsenal casually strolled in to sign Mesut Ozil on transfer deadline day.
United had made a pathetic attempt to sign Ozil, along with the likes of PSG, Monaco and ourselves. However they seemingly gave up on the German, instead concentrating all their efforts on Atletico Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera.
Given David Moyes’ current situation, the signing of Ozil would have been perfect. A world renowned superstar to bolster their flimsy midfield, and ease the pressure on the manager’s shoulders after their 4 points from 9 since the season began.
With the loss at Anfield highlighting their problems linking attack with midfield, and Tom Cleverley floundering in the number 10 role, Ozil presented himself as their perfect man. Having failed to sign similar players with Fabregas and Alcantara turning down the Reds, and Ozil wanting out with the introduction of Gareth Bale, there seemed to be no more perfect deal.
Yet the German midfielder is currently having a medical at Arsenal.
The footballing world has been shocked on the final day of the window as the creative midfielder looks set to sign for over £40million at the Emirates. Yet the move isn’t as shocking as first suspected.
Chosing between 20 times Premier League winners, three time European champions and arguably the biggest team in England; or a team which hasn’t won a trophy since 2005 is a simple decision.
But choosing between Arsene Wenger and David Moyes? No brainer.
United could have had Ozil in 5 minutes, but their lack of enthusiasm to sign the player as opposed to Wenger’s admiration of the player is pivotal. A world class player joining the Premier League can never be a bad thing, especially when he is joining Arsenal and the deal is a huge middle finger from Madrid to Spurs.
Tottingham have been a slave to the Madrid giants since their “partnership” was struck last year, with the La Liga side abusing their power over the London side. Signing their best player two years in a row with Modric and Bale, while offering no deals in return and then selling a global superstar to Arsenal. Ha.
As for United, their transfer window can be considered largely a failure having failed to so far bring in any of the rumoured names, like Mata, Fellaini, Baines or Fabregas. They could have had Ozil by hardly lifting a finger, but they don’t, and we do. Ha.
