Disappointing news for Arsenal fans today: first-choice right back Bacary Sagna appears likely to leave the club on a free transfer when his contract expires next summer.
The Daily Mail reports that the 30-year-old France international – who joined the Gunners from Auxerre in 2007 – is hoping to substantially increase his current £60,000 a week deal, which was signed in 2008.
Arsenal are apparently yet to offer Sagna a new deal, instead proposing a one-year extension to his existing terms. Sagna, who can also play at centre back, deems this unacceptable – particularly in view of his previous rejection of lucrative offers from Real Madrid and Manchester City.
This is consistent with boss Arsène Wenger’s policy when dealing with players aged 30 and above.
Bosman window opens on 1 January
Though currently out with an ankle knock Sagna – who has made the PFA Team of the Year twice during his time at the Emirates – has been one of the club’s best and most consistent performers this season, but the club’s chief scout Steve Rowley is already searching for a replacement for Sagna.
In view of the player’s recent fine form, many fans will be hoping that Sagna and the club can reach some compromise before he can discuss contracts with overseas clubs on 1 January. While 21-year-old Carl Jenkinson is seen as the club’s likely long-term right back it is questionable whether or not he is yet ready to make the step up to act as first-choice.
The Mail suggests Paris St. Germain, Monaco, Galatasaray and Fenerbache are all keen on signing Sagna.
