Wolfsburg playmaker Diego has opened the door to a potential move to the Emirates by confessing his admiration for the north London club, describing Arsenal as the perfect fit for him.
The hugely talented midfielder however also talked up the possibility of a switch to Premier League rivals Southampton.
Arsenal perfect
Diego told The Sun: “I know there is interest from Premier League clubs. I have heard Arsenal is one of them.
“It would be the ideal destination for me because their style suits my characteristics perfectly. Of course I would say yes to Arsenal.
“Southampton have great organization and discipline and big talents like Adam Lallana. But again there is nothing concrete.”
Focusing on present first
The 28-year-old, who has played for an array of high profile clubs, hasn’t appeared for the Brazil national team since 2008 and a move to England could help him force his way back into Luiz Felipe Scolari’s team.
Wolfsburg are currently challenging for a Champions League place in the Bundesliga, with the Brazilian a pivotal part of Dieter Hecking’s team.
And he admitted that he has to focus on helping his current side achieve their goals first before sorting out his future.
The former Juventus man said: “Playing in England is a very attractive option at the peak of my career.
“But I’m focusing on helping Wolfsburg get to the Champions League.”
Diego’s contract runs out in the summer and the Metro’s Jamie Sanderson believes he won’t be agreeing another extension.
No conclusion in sight
Arsenal have been linked with him for some time and he could sign a pre-contract agreement with the Gunners in January should both sides of the parties agree a deal.
However, this may be extremely premature as although the player would like a move, we have several attacking midfielders already on our books and we need to ponder if we necessarily need him.
Will Diego be moving to the Emirates, will he leaving Wolfsburg? We’ll have to wait until the summer to find out the answers and see where he ends up ahead of the 2014/15 destination.
