It comes as no surprise that today Alex Song has been linked with a transfer away from the Nou Camp, with Arsenal and Manchester United monitoring the players’ situation.
The Cameroonian has struggled to maintain a spot in the first team since his £15 million move to Barcelona due to the vast amount of talent available in the midfield.
I knew this would happen. You knew this would happen. Alex Song was destined to become the ‘new Hleb.’ Was Song ignorant enough to not think it would happen?
Would you take him back?
When Arsenal announced the sale of Alex Song, it came as a bit of a shock. It happened suddenly and quickly, but the reaction from the fans was a rather mixed one.
Everybody was still fuming with Robin van Persie’s decision to join Manchester United that nothing else could make the fans more upset.
For the 2011/12 season, Song and RVP were central to Arsenal’s push for Champions League football and with Song’s contribution to the Arsenal attack the club managed to finish 3rd in the Barclay’s Premier League.
Nevertheless, Song was primarily a defensive midfielder and he regularly left large spaces between the midfield and defence. Defensively Song was a liability. He could not tackle and was undisciplined.
Since joining the Catalan giants, Song has only managed 27 league appearances and scored just the one goal. Back in April this year, Song’s cousin revealed he was extremely frustrated with life at Barcelona and wanted to return to the Arsenal.
Reports today suggest Barcelona are willing to make a £5 million loss on Alex Song as they are prepared to let him leave for as little as £10 million in January. There is no doubt Song is a talented player, and still fairly young, but do Arsenal need him? And would you take him back?
Personally, it would be a waste of money. He is not good enough defensively and we managed to resign Flamini for a bargain price this summer. Arteta is also playing remarkably this season.
Wenger may as well save that £10 million and use it to buy a world class striker or another central defender. If Moyes wants him they can have him, because right now, they need Song more than we do.
