Following last night’s 2-0 defeat to Napoli, which still saw Arsenal progress to the knock-out stages of the Champions League, manger Arsene Wenger admitted he will be hoping for some luck in the draw.
Borussia Dortmund’s late win over Marseile meant they finished top of the group because of a better head to head record with Arsenal as they had scored two away goals compared to the Gunners one.
14th time lucky?!
Wenger is now hoping it is 14th time lucky for the Gunners, he added: “To finish second makes the potential draw more difficult.
“In the last four or five years we had a difficult draw. Maybe this time we will be a bit luckier.
“You look at the teams that are potentially there – at least we will know we have a difficult draw.
“On the other hand we have qualified for the last 16 for the 14th consecutive year and maybe the number 14 will bring us a bit of luck.”
12 o’clock Monday
The draw for the Champions League round of 16 takes place in Nyon on December 16 at 12 o’clock.
What Arsenal also know is that they will play the first-leg at home having been a runner-up in the group, therefore not seeded.
Potential opponents
The teams they could come up against are: Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Paris St-Germain and Atletico Madrid.
All extremely tough draws but to win the Champions League you have to beat the best and our chances should certainly not be ruled out yet.
We beat Bayern Munich away from home last season, on our day we are capable of beating Barcelona and we are more than a match for the other three.
