Following a bad week for Arsenal, the last thing fans want to hear is news of one of the teams key players leaving the club. However, this may transpire to be the case with French international full-back Bacary Sagna.
The Frenchman, whose contract is up at the end of the season, is yet to commit to the club and is currently in negotiations with the club; however, things do not appear to be progressing smoothly.
Talks ongoing
Manager Arsene Wenger is confident that the full back will put pen-to-paper and sign a new two year deal with the club worth an estimated £70,000 per week.
Despite the current negotiations, Sagna has admitted he could move on, and a January departure is not off the cards.
Sagna has cited the same reasons as other players to have left the club in recent years, bemoaning the lack of success and the selling of key players, stating:
“I was upset, angry when players left... If we had them today, it would make a massive difference. Since 2007, a very competitive team left. I would love to win trophies with this club, it's a club I love so much but something is missing.”
"I've still got six months on my contract with Arsenal. We are in negotiations. It's an option to go somewhere in January but I always had a good relationship with Arsenal.”
An important player
Although we have an eager replacement, in fan-favourite Carl Jenkinson ready and waiting should Sagna decide to call time on his Arsenal career, Gooners should be hoping that the Frenchman decides to renew his contract.
At times last season, Sagna seemed disinterested when playing and looked a shadow of his former self, however, this season he seems reborn, and has proven his credentials as one of the finest fullbacks in the league.
Sagna has become a key part of an Arsenal defensive unit which, barring Saturday against City, had one of the most frugal defences in Europe. To lose a player with Sagna’s defensive, and attacking, abilities would be awful for an Arsenal side chasing silverware seriously for the first time in a few years.
Also, should the Frenchman decide to move on Arsenal could be left short as despite his commitment and enthusiasm, Carl Jenkinson is still a raw talent and needs more time before becoming an established member of the first team.
Any hopes Arsenal have of winning silverware this season could rest of retaining the services of experienced full back Bacary Sagna, so hopefully a contract is sorted out soon!
