Arsenal’s club captain Thomas Vermaelen has been nothing but a benchwarmer this season; this isn’t due to Vermaelen not performing well enough but actually due to the unbeatable Mertesacker and Koscielny partnership.

Rumours have again came out in the press today that the Belgian could be on his way out of the club as he has quite a few clubs interested in him.

Starting with West Ham, they have a very shaky defence this season and could really do with back up; although Allardyce himself has been quoted saying it is unlikely for them to sign someone of Vermaelen’s calibre:

“I think under the circumstances at Arsenal, in the position that they’re in, in the Champions League and cup matches, they’ve had to use him as soon as any of the two defenders have been injured, so I don’t think there’s any chance we’ll get somebody of his quality. It would be nice if I we could.”

Off to Italy?

It has also been rumored that Vermaelen could be off to Napoli after they have been considering a €5.5 million bid.

However this amount of money does not seem enough for Arsenal as they seem to want more for the captain.

Is it realistic now?

Although you cannot question the defensive partnership of the BFG and Koscielny; if one of them were to get injured and we did sell Vermaelen our only experienced option would be to move Sagna to CB and put in Jenkinson who hasn’t seemed entirely stable this season.

So looking at it realistically it does not seem that Vermaelen will move in this transfer window, however if circumstances were to remain the same then do not rule out a summer move away for the Belgian international.
