There was a fair amount of optimism around the Emirates Stadium this past week because Bayern Munich had come to town and that was expected. The fans were excited hoping something special may occur especially with the recent memory of Arsenal beating Barcelona 2-1 with the famous voice of Martin Tyler shouting Arshavin.
This was noticeable when the team came out to a rousing reception which got everyone’s blood flowing and adrenalin pumping. The atmosphere was brilliant which went up another level to previous games and allowed Arsenal to make a tremendous start and that followed when Mesut Ӧzil won a penalty for Arsenal.
Arsenal’s record signing decided to take responsibility and take the spot kick although seemingly low on confidence with a few poor performances over recent weeks.
However, the resultant spot kick was missed and from then on Ӧzil confidence drained and more misery was piled on to Arsenal when Wojciech Szczęsny saw red.
The Defence of Ӧzil
Notably, the thing which has angered and annoyed me еhe most is the criticism of Ӧzil. Although this was expected it is sad to see as our fans which are meant to be the best fans in the country.
Mesut Ӧzil was brave to step forward and he knew he had let the fans down which prompted him to apologise. Lukas Podolski also spoke out saying the following “Thats football! Trust in Mesut, he will give it back twice in return and make all of us happy. Friends stand together. Let's go AFC!”
Does it remind you of a particular Legend
The most comparable comparison which has been talked about is the penalty kick of Dennis Bergkamp which Arsene Wenger promptly spoke about in his pre-match press conference vs. Sunderland and let’s face it - Dennis Bergkamp is a legend.
This is emphasised more today with the unveiling of Dennis Bergkamp’s statue at the Emirates. It was clear to see the emotion on Bergkamp’s face and quotes have emerged on twitter of him saying “Dennis thanks the fans, his old team-mates, his old manager and his friends and family "This is a beautiful club." #DB10Statue”
Dennis Bergkamp spoke about the support he received and that was after he missed a massive penalty himself. This shows if we get behind Ӧzil then he could become a legend just like the Iceman himself.
If we don’t get behind Mesut Ӧzil he may be the next big star to leave the Emirates.
