The day before Arsene Wenger’s 1000th game in charge of Arsenal has seen fresh rumours that the Arsenal boss is set to sign a new 2 year deal. It seems the deal has been in place since around October 2013.
Pay Rise
With all the talk about budgets this week, it appears that Arsene Wenger has Arsenal’s finances into consideration in signing his new deal.
A £1 million pound pay rise has reportedly been rejected by the Frenchman but his new deal will be enhanced with performance related top ups regarding the team’s success.
Loyalty
During the trophy barren years of Arsene Wenger’s tenure it has been easy for some to take ‘le professeur’ for granted and forget the many opportunities he has turned down in order to keep managing in North London.
He has revealed before his milestone this weekend that the chances were there for him to seek pastures new.
“This club gave me a chance. But I think as well at an important periods I have shown loyalty and turned many things down and have accepted to work with restricted potential”
There has been no secret of Real Madrid’s interest in Wenger over the years of chopping and changing managers at the Bernabeu and rejecting the chance to work in Madrid should be recognised as tremendous loyalty from Wenger.
Also, offers from French financial giants PSG have been prevalent in recent years but the Arsenal boss now feels that Arsenal are able to compete at the same level as the big spending forces around Europe and the Premier League.
"Today we can fight with the top clubs financially again. I believe the club is in a very strong position today.
When Arsenal moved to the Emirates stadium the financial constraints became key in maintaining the transition and now with time on our side, the job he has done can be appreciated by most.
Although at times his transfer policy may come into question, the squad he has assembled for this season and a fight for the Premier League and FA Cup should leave Arsenal fans feeling they have the perfect man for the job.
Fitting Weekend
It would be almost poetic for Arsene Wenger to defeat Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge in his 1000th match in charge this weekend.
Before Mourinho’s arrival Chelsea were not much trouble to Wenger, but his management style and money spending power caught Arsenal at the time they were trying to rebuild and the Arsenal could just not keep up.
The difference in character between these two coaches can be summed up by Mourinho’s running onto to Aston Villa pitch last weekend resulting in a sending off.
These are two very different characters and I would suggest that in Arsene Wenger, Arsenal fans have a manager who represents them with honour and dignity.
Despite his unbelievable success as a manager Mourinho lacks the humility and grace of Wenger. It would be fitting that a graceful Arsenal win would occur this weekend for the Arsenal in honour of the Frenchman and make a big statement in Arsenal’s title push.
