According to Metro, Arsenal show their interest in Everton defender John Stones, despite the Gunners present battle with the Merseyside based club for fourth spot in the league.

Barnsley’s Best

The Barnsley born 19 year-old has been thrust into spotlight after a series of impressive performances whilst deputising for injured captain Phil Jagielka.

Able to play at right back and centre-back, his versatility will attract Arsène Wenger as he looks to rebuild his defensive line in wake of Bacary Sagna’s impending departure.

Toffees Talent

Stones has gained many plaudits in the previous months, Everton manager Roberto Martinez praising the young Englishman’s performances after the 3-0 win against the Gunners last weekend.

We need to allow him to develop, but he's a joy to have in the squad.

“He's so calm and composed on the ball and in the same way so aggressive in his defending. We are all excited about his development.”

Uncertain Future

Despite only 16 appearances for the Toffees, Everton will not let their prodigy go too easily. Arsenal will be expecting a high transfer fee quoted if they decide to proceed with their enquiry over the potential international star.

Bacary Sagna’s departure, coupled with Thomas Vermaelen’s unclear future at the club, gives Wenger the justification to be looking for a new versatile young talent to add to his team.

Whether or not Everton will want to part ways with him, or whether he would want to go to North London himself, all depends on the final few weeks of the season.
