It is the understanding of Telegraph sport that Arsenal have made an enquiry for Bayern Munich’s defensive midfielder Javi Martinez.
Jeremy Wilson who writes about Arsenal tweeted the following:
“Arsenal interested in Javi Martinez - holding midfield key priority this summer with striker and r-back.”
He then provided the link to the article which says Martinez is unhappy with his role under Guardiola.
It is believed that Martinez would cost around 25m and has been compared to Patrick Viera by Spanish coach Vincente del Bosque.
Martinez has been quoted as saying the following in the past about Patrick Vieira;
“I admired him because he was a complete player. He defended, he won possession, he passed, he shot. He was a total footballer. We are similar because of the position we play, our height and our stride. But I would be happy to be even a quarter of what he was.”
However, Lars Bender is also high on the list of possible targets for Arsenal to explore. The article goes onto talk about how Wenger believes they can get the deal done with Arsenal’s financial discipline.
This looks like a good move in the right direction. Javi Martinez is definitely the type of player we need, a proper defensive midfield who would complement the attacking midfield of Ramsey, Wilshere and Ӧzil. I believe Arsenal are looking at him but I am unsure if it will happen. If Wenger is willing to spend big money then by the end of August we may see Martinez in an Arsenal jersey.
