Once touted as a future Arsenal captain, young midfielder Jack Wilshere has landed himself in hot water yet again, after being caught smoking and drinking on a holiday this week.
Wilshere, only 22-years-old, has tested the patience of the Arsenal hierarchy yet again, after pictures were spread over the Internet today over his holiday antics with friends in Las Vegas.
Wrong Direction
Accompanied by England teammate Joe Hart, this isn’t the first time that Wilshere has been caught abusing his body in the public eye.
After being caught with a cigarette in 2013 and forced to apologise in the press, Arsène Wenger internally dealt with the matter and will be furious to see an identical incident coupled with the guzzling of alcohol in a hotel swimming pool.
With previous Arsenal legends that Wenger has had to work with having severe addiction issues, the manager will feel that his faith in the player has been misguided and will be unhappy to think that Wilshere is heading in the wrong direction of his career.
Two Strikes
Wilshere himself declared after the first incident that,
“I made a mistake, players make mistakes, and I’m not a smoker. I spoke with the boss and he asked me what happened, I explained to him. “
“We sorted it out and he put me in the team and hopefully I repaid him. I’m not a smoker, so I think that will be my last one.”
The Englishman may not be so lucky this time, Wenger telling the media that,
"I disagree completely with that behavior.”
Cause for concern
While Wilshere is young and should be treating his body with the utmost respect during a critical period in his career, it is his bad run of form coupled with substance abuse that is a cause for concern.
Already with his Arsenal place under threat, as well as the impending signing of Sami Khedira, it would be a shame, but a realistic chance that he could find himself frozen out of the club and burnt out of his career.
