After being priced out of a move for other goalkeepers, Arsenal are finalising transfer talks over Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina.
Open for Negotiations
The 25-year-old, who kept two clean sheets during the World Cup, is subject to a £3 million move to Arsenal, after French side Nice told the club they are open for negotiations.
As revealed by Arsenal Latest on Sunday, the player has agreed personal terms with the Gunners and will leave his club of six years with 12 months to go on his current contract.
Economical and Practical
The Telegraph claim that Arsène Wenger’s preferred choice was Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall, whose Premier League experience has priced him out of a move to the Gunners after they requested £10 million for his signature.
However, the Arsenal manager has had lengthy discussions with Ospina’s advisors and has decided that the deal is the most economical, as well as most practical, for the transfer to be completed this week.
Quality Competition
Ospina will arrive as a replacement for departed FA Cup hero Lukasz Fabianski, as well as give Wojciech Szczesny some quality back up and competition for the number one goalkeeping spot.
While the signings of Mathieu Debuchy and Sami Khedira will be announced shortly, joining big money mover Alexis Sanchez, the new goalkeeper will show Arsenal’s intent of adding to the core of their squad efficiently in order to compete for the title next campaign.
Nice Signing
It would be foolish to unnecessarily spend big money on a back-up goalkeeper, especially as Szczesny will still be the manager’s undisputed number one next season.
Nevertheless, it provides Arsenal with a more than competent goalkeeper for domestic competitions, while giving sufficient back up for the Pole in goal during any unfortunate injury spell or bad form.
