After weeks of reported negotiations, it looks as though Arsenal’s pursuit of German World Cup winner Sami Khedira is finally over.
Monaco Bound
Khedira’s club Real Madrid are in advanced talks with AS Monaco over the transfer of Colombian star James Rodriguez, The Mirror claiming they have offered the German as part of the multi-million pound deal.
The BBC’s David Ornstein tweeted today that ‘Arsenal are no longer pursuing Khedira’ but they are still, ‘in (the) market for DMF.’
‘I Cannot Give You Any Names’
The news comes after Arsène Wenger refused to rule out any specific players and hinted that he may decide to continue his German acquisitions this summer.
Speaking to ESPN, he said,
“Look, I can't give you any names. What is good is that (Arsenal's German internationals) won the World Cup so their confidence should be stronger.
Winning makes you only stronger and more confident and hopefully we'll benefit from that next season."
Portuguese Persuasion
The more likely deal now is one for Portuguese international William Carvalho, who is looking for a move away from his current club Sporting Lisbon.
As reported by Arsenal Latest, the Carvalho deal is complicated, due to third party ownership of the player himself.
However, Sporting have hinted that the player would be available for less than the £35 million buy out clause in his contract, therefore looks like a transfer that the Gunners could pursue in the coming weeks.
Pressing Priorities
A defensive midfielder has been made a priority, with Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini’s long-term futures in doubt by the North London club.
Despite this, a goalkeeper, right back and centre back will be made priorities before the club kick off the campaign to Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium on 16th August.
Let It Go
It is time to finally let Khedira go, as Real Madrid look ready to make him a weight in any potential deal for Rodriguez.
Interest in world-class stars like him is encouraging and if media reports are anything to go by, Wenger is ready to build a squad of world-beaters for the upcoming campaign.
