The transfer saga of Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina is almost at completion, with multiple media reports suggesting that a deal is in place for him at Arsenal.
Nice Deal
Broken by The Evening Standard last night, a £3 million fee has been agreed for the World Cup star, who only has 12 months left on his Nice contract.
Brought in to replace the departed Lukasz Fabianski and challenge Wojciech Szczesny for the number one spot, he will officially become a Gunner on his impending return from holiday.
With a four-year deal worth £60,000 a week, Ospina’s two clean sheets in Colombia’s successful World Cup campaign has made him hot property on the transfer market.
Swooping Quickly
Arsenal have made sure to swoop in quickly and were encouraged by Nice President Jean-Pierre Rivere’s comments to AFP on Sunday.
“There isn't an agreement yet but we're not far away.”
Ospina will become Arsenal’s third signing of the summer, following the transfers of Alexis Sanchez and Mathieu Debuchy.
His arrival signals Arsène Wenger’s intent to add quality and competition to his first team squad for next season, in order to challenge domestically and abroad for silverware to add to last campaign’s FA Cup.
Striving For Improvement
For the first time in years, Arsenal have invested in a world class goalkeeper at the top of his game and the competition for Szczesny can only be encouraging to help him strive for improvement.
Available in case of injury or suspension, as well as to lead an expected younger team through domestic cup runs, Ospina’s signing is a clever, budget and low risk one that can only enhance the Gunners chances.
