Despite the Gunners eagerly awaiting the arrival of Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina, there are rumours that the club will add another to their squad in the form of Spaniard Iker Casillas.
Long-term termination
Spanish newspaper Sport claim today that Arsenal have offered the goalkeeper an offer that he cannot refuse, which will lead to the 33-year-olds mutual contract termination.
Despite being a reportedly big fan of Casillas, it is uncharacteristic of Wenger to spend what The Metro claim would be in excess of £100,000 a week to secure the player on a five-year contract.
While it is a no brainer to Casillas to leave Madrid after being told he would be third choice in the pecking order, Wojciech Szczesny is aware that he is undisputed number one come the start of the season.
Ospina Time
More talks are expected over the next few weeks, while in the meantime a deal for David Ospina will come to completion, following his arrival to London from holiday.
Based on current form, Arsenal would be better off with the Colombian World Cup star, who kept two clean sheets on his sides journey to the quarter-finals.
In contrast, the seven goals that Casillas conceded during the group stage of Spain’s train wreck of a tournament tarnished his once untouchable status as the country’s most formidable goalkeeper.
Fall From Grace
A few years ago, Casillas to the Gunners would have been a dream come true to provide quality competition to Szczesny.
Now, with the keeper matured and Ospina’s impending arrival, it is unlikely that if the Spaniard were to unexpectedly arrive, he would even play a domestic tournament game.
A dramatic fall from grace for one of the games greatest players and leaders.
