Despite last weeks signing of French international Mathieu Debuchy, it looks as though Arsène Wenger is set to sign another fullback in the form of Southampton’s Calum Chambers.
Medical Completed
The Telegraph report that the Gunners are prepared to bid £10 million, in order to test their Premier League counterparts resolve in an approach to sign the highly rated Englishman.
With only 23 first-team appearances, including one against Arsenal last campaign, The Daily Star claim that a deal is so far advanced that the player already completed his medical on Thursday.
Following the revelation of a five-year deal in the pipeline, Chambers arrival at the Emirates Stadium would look like the end of Carl Jenkinson’s Gunners career, who has been linked with a move away from the North London club this summer.
Versatility to replace Vermaelen
His potential transfer to Arsenal comes after the side already spent £12 million on Debuchy, who came in to replace the Manchester City departed Bacary Sagna.
It is thought that Chambers would come in to provide competition for the ex-Newcastle man, as well as use his versatility to fill the void that will be left once Thomas Vermaelen completes his long touted move from the club.
The right-back position is one that Arsène Wenger has seen as problematic over the past few years, his scouts recommending Serge Aurier, Javier Manquillo and Gino Peruzzi over the summer transfer market.
High price, high risk
At 19-years-old, it is difficult to know what kind of player Chambers will become, therefore such a high price tag will come as a risk to the Gunners.
Nevertheless, quality back up in each position can do no harm and will enhance the squad for the upcoming campaign.
